Mr. Danny Faure, who was representing President James Michel at the 14th edition of the

‘Delhi Sustainable Development Summit’ (DSDS) which is a flagship event of TERI, The Energy and Resources Institute, from 6th February to 8th February 2014 that kicked off at Hotel Taj Palace, New Delhi. The theme of this year’s Summit was “Attaining Food, Water, and Energy Security for All”.

His address was focussed on the sustainability of the oceans and the blue economy, which was well greeted by the summit as conventionally the attention of DSDS has been on land-based concerns.

In his speech, Vice-President Faure stressed that “We small islands know very well that it is the oceans that drive the global climate, it is the oceans that contributes significantly to the air that we breathe, and the food that we eat. It is the oceans that connect us through trade routes. And whilst humankind has been notorious in exploiting and polluting our oceans, we have yet to define a framework for the sustainable management of the oceans.”

He ended his speech by saying that “Our blue economy is the green economy. It is about ocean conservation and sustainable use; it is about creating blue jobs, it is about eradication of poverty, it is about obtaining more equitable revenue from our resources, it is about creating a link between what we do

on land and in the ocean, it is about building partnerships for development. Preserving the oceans is a global responsibility, a joint effort and a long-lasting commitment.”

On this event, the Tenth Sustainable Development Leadership Award was awarded to Mr. Anand Mahindra, Chairman and Managing Director of Mahindra & Mahindra. The Award congratulates global leaders for their shares in the field of sustainable development. Togo consists of a long strip of land in West Africa. It shares borders with three countries

that include Benin, Burkina Faso and Ghana. It has a coastline in the south along the Bight of Benin of the Gulf of Guinea in the North Atlantic Ocean. Togo is primarily divided in six geographic regions featuring low – lying sandy beaches, tidal flats, shallow lagoons, plateau and mountains.

OVL and OIL have together completed the attainment of Videocon Group’s 10 percent stake in a gigantic Mozambique gas field along with OVL additionally buying US energy major Anadarko Petroleum’s 10 percent stake in the same block for $ 2.64 billion. According to sources, ONGC Videsh Ltd have elevated around $1.5 billion in one-year link loans from foreign lenders, while OIL engaged $900 million to stock their corresponding share of payments to Videocon. Also, talks are going on that OVL would increase another $2.6 billion for the Anadarko payments. OVL stated, “OVL and OIL have completed the acquisition of 10 percent interest in the Rovuma Area 1 offshore block, Mozambique, by acquiring 100 percent shares of Videocon Mozambique Rovuma 1 Ltd, the

company holding the 10 percent interest in the Area 1, from Videocon Mauritius Energy Ltd.”

Furthermore, the bought up stakes will be split in a 60:40 ratio between OVL and OIL. The agreement by two businesses was signed with Videocon Mauritius energy thus, procuring the stake in the gas field. OVL added, “This marks OVL’s entry into this emerging world-class offshore gas basin with significant future upside potential.

Area 1 has the potential to become one of the world’s biggest LNG producing hubs and is strategically located to supply LNG to the growing Indian gas market.” Also, Videocon’s Director Kuldeep Drabu quoted on the agreement, “Videocon shall also continue to explore more opportunities in energy sector elsewhere…pursuant to its corporate objective and strategy to remain actively invested in E&P activities worldwide.”

At that rate, Africa's population will double in 30 years. Fast population growth has put a lot of pressure on Africa’s ecosystems. Glitches such as food security, land tenure, environ-mental degradation and the absence of water supply are often related to high rates of population growth.

activities. It must also encompass civil society, public agencies and the private sector in growth programs to aid in alleviating the problems.

The stage has arisen for African nations to reveal their ability to be able to confront these challenges. There is also a prerequisite for national governments to engross the private sector successfully to deliver business elucidations to environmental challenges. Governments should also felicitate invention that allows the accomplishment of national environmental primacies.

I believe that environmentally friendly sustainable development in Africa is almost decision making, trade-offs and the delicate balance of significances. The Process:-coffee cleaning & Blending: The first step is thorough cleaning and removal of defective beans, followed by blending of different types and size to ensure best flavor.

Aroma recovery: The extracted coffee liquor is passed through the aroma recovery plant. In the plant the volatile aroma is stripped off from the coffee before it enters the evaporator. The flavor is returned to coffee just prior to it entering the spray dryer.

concentration: The fifth step is concentration of the extract through multi-effect evaporators with TVR system.

spray Drying: The sixth step is conversion of concentrate to instant coffee powder by spray drying. Drying is done under controlled conditions to protect and preserve aroma and flavor. Fluidized bed dryer is coupled with the system.

Agglomeration: Spray dried powder then converted into soluble granules in an agglomerator tower.

freeze Drying: Freeze dryer retains aroma, improves appearance and taste because freeze drying takes place at a low temperature which minimizes heat damage and retains volatile components (aroma). It also increases the shelf life of the dried product as compared to standard drying practices. Freeze drying involves dehydration of food products at low temperature and pressure. As a result only the moisture is removed, leaving the molecular structure intact. The end product is light in weight with least or no change in volume.

Worldwide freeze-drying technology is considered as the ultimate amongst all other dehydration methods. Hence this technique is currently being used for the production of instant coffee.

Packing & filling: The Instant Coffee Powder is taken to the filling and packing stage. For filling into tins or jars, vacuum operated filling system is used. For filling into sachets, a form fill-sealing machine is used. LaQuan Smith is an African-American fashion designer who founded and is the CEO of the women's clothing brand LaQuan Smith, LLC. Smith is based in Queens, New York. LaQuan Smith has combated cancer, outfitted superstars like Lady Gaga and Beyonce, and has shown at New York Fashion Week. Smith is one of the ten modern New York City centered designers presented in an exhibit at Pratt Manhattan Gallery in Chelsea called "Black Dress" which pays tribute to African American designers. Born and raised in St. Albans, Smith has no proper training, no monetary backers and his grandmother taught him how to stitch. But at age 26, he has Vogue Magazine and a long list of celebrity clients singing his praises for what he calls a "hip hop Parisian" style that Rihanna put on the fashionista map. "This is the catsuit that she wore but in the 3D version, and the gold version. So we remixed and did it in a dress," says Smith.

Since he can't get the big business backers in his box this red hot will be at no show at New York Fashion Week. Professor Adrienne Jones says it's a main aim why she dreamed up the exhibit. "This is not the time for us right now. We come and go but the money isn't always there so we have to try different venues to get out," says Jones.

excellency, please comment on the booming relationship between Gabon and india.

The bilateral relations between India and Gabon are very cordial at the moment. The Embassy of Gabon was established in India in the year 2008 to show the will of the Republic of Gabon to intensify the relationship with India. We have had a lot of interactions with the Indian public and private sector and today I am happy to tell you that there are a good number of Indian businessmen going to Gabon either to open some businesses or to settle down. For your information, as part of the diversification of our economy, the government of Gabon has opened a Special Economic Zone aimed at giving a value addition to our raw materials. Accordingly, we are inviting Indian companies to take advantage of the S E Z which offers them very attractive terms.

Gabon is among the first 15 African countries to have implemented the

P an African e- network projects like Tele-education, Tele- medicine etc. What further developments have you made in this sector?

Gabon is one of those countries who immediately participated in this project when it was inaugurated in 2009. I do remember, H.E. Mr. Pranab Mukherjee, P resident of India, during his tenure as the Foreign Minister interacted with the African counterparts and among them was the Gabonese Minister also as they talked of the ways and means to develop this project. We have been trying to take advantage of this asset in tele- education and tele- medicine. Omar Bongo University in Gabon has signed an agreement with Amity University in India. Also we have gone into a very heavy project of modernizing our hospitals in order to equip these hospitals with state-of-the-art technologies.

how attractive is the tourism sector of Gabon for the indian investors?

Gabon is a resource-rich country and

the sixth largest oil producer in Sub-Saharan Africa. It is well endowed with arable land, forest, and mineral resources. It has extraordinary biodiversity, as well as rich deposits of manganese and iron ore. Gabon has a lot of possibilities that it is offering to the prospective Indian investors. We have natural landscape, flora and fauna which are coupled with the fact that we are one of these rare African countries who are set to develop ecotourism. We have devoted 11% of our national territory to the creation of 13 natural parks.

industrialization of Gabon’ is one of the main objectives of the Gabonese P resident. What are your views on the same?

Since taking office in October 2009, His Excellency Ali BONGO ONDIMBA, the P resident of Gabon has been carrying out vast economic reforms meant to transform our country into an emerging economy by 2025, based on the following three pillars:

» Gabon Vert (green Gabon), to sustainably develop the country’s natural resources;

» Gabon Industriel (industrial Gabon), to process locally our minerals and export high value added products;

» Gabon des Services (service orientated Gabon), to develop the Gabonese workforce and infrastructures.

Gabon is committed to diversify its economy to become an emerging economic power by 2050 via its sustainable development strategy referred to as Gabon emergent. Kindly shed some light on this programme?

Under the “Emerging Gabon” strategy launched by the Gabonese Government under the leadership of incumbent President, H.E. Mr. Ali BONGO OND IMBA, the idea is to transform Gabon into an economic power by 2025. Consequently, since coming to power in 2009, he has been implementing reforms with a view to enhancing the business climate to attract investment.

Considerable foreign support has helped Gabon to be one of the prosperous and stable African countries. In an exclusive interview with H.E. Mr. Desire Koumba, Ambassador of the Republic of Gabon to India shared with Kanchi Batra, Sub-Editor, INDO AFRICA TIMES an overview of the country having abundant natural resources and his vision to enhance the booming relationship between Gabon and India.
