Background• Fairfax County awarded a Transportation and
Land Use Connections (TLC) grant from the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (MWCOG)
• TLC grants provide technical assistance to support local government to improve transportation and land use coordination

Study Information• TLC grants are six-month studies that are
a combined effort of local jurisdiction and consultant
• Funding for these grants is limited• Due to time and funding limits, scope of
project is focused on limited number of surrounding streets

Why here? Why now?• 2014: Fairfax County funds $1 million for bicycle
improvements around the Vienna Metro station as part of $1.4 billion Transportation Priorities Plan
• 2015: VDOT announces “Transform 66” plan which aims to add capacity to I-66 corridor
• 2015: Fairfax County DOT works with community and VDOT to include parallel trail in “Transform 66” project

– In I-66 right of way, and on parallel streets• Project also includes improvements on
bridge crossings– Nutley Street-Combined shared-use path– Vaden Drive-Bike Lanes and wide sidewalks
• I-66 Trail uses Virginia Center Blvd, Country Creek Rd, and Sutton Rd

and safety concerns for bicyclists in study area
• Analyze safety and operational conditions for bicyclists
• Identify candidate bicycle treatments for study corridors

estimates for candidate alternatives• Develop typical cross-section for preferred
alternative for each corridor• Identify methods to achieve typical cross-
section for each corridor• Develop 30% design plans

Study Schedule• February-Compile GIS data, set
basemaps, begin to identify existing conditions
• March-Public introduction and input– Tonight: Provide input on bicycling in the
area, important factors, facility types, areas of concern, etc…
– Late March: Public outreach event at Vienna Metro to generate additional input

Study Schedule• April-Complete analysis of both intersections
and recommended treatments. Develop cross sections for each roadway in the study.
• May-Public meeting to present recommendations and gather feedback
• June-Finalize alternatives and complete study

Breakout sessions• Divide into groups around an area map• 30 minutes total• Bicycling conditions in the area
– Do you bike? Do you feel safe? Do you feel comfortable? Why or Why not?
– What would make you bike more? Dedicated facilities? On-road or Off-road?
– Are certain intersections worse than others? How would you improve conditions?
