Hanja is the Korean name for Chinese characters. It was used as the main writing system in Korea until the late 19th century, despite the invention of Hangul in the 1440s.
Hanja is rarely used in modern Korean, but is occasionally used to distinguish words with different meanings but the same Hangul spelling.
