Main St., Durham, NC 27701 Letter from our Presidents It is quite common for our members, the media and others to refer to Durham People’s Alliance as though we were one single organization. Many folks may not be aware that PA is in fact three distinct, but related, organizations. There is the Political Action Committee (PAPAC), which makes endorsements at election time. There is the PA Fund, which is a small 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization that has functioned historically to provide small grants to educate the Durham community about issues that arise over time. Finally, there is what is known as the Chapter, which is where much of the issue and committee work of PA happens. This is a nonprofit organization registered with North Carolina, but which does not have any sort of federal legal nonprofit status. When you join PA, you join the Chapter. It is called the Chapter, because when PA first was formed nearly 40 years ago, it was envisioned that there would be Chapters across the State, thus the Durham Chapter of the People’s Alliance. We want our members to understand the different structures of the PA organization because we are going to be focused in the coming months on solidifying the legal and administrative frameworks of these three parts of PA. Without boring everyone on the various legal and tax filing obligations, as PA grows, we want to ensure the continued integrity of our different organizations. Specifically, we will be transitioning the Chapter so that it has 501(c)(4) status. This will allow us to better conduct our issue work on topics such as housing, education, marriage equality, environmental protection and economic inequality. In addition, we will be able to coordinate more extensively with other 501(c)(4) organizations in North Carolina, for example, the coalition of partners working with America Votes, such as Equality NC, Environment NC, and Progress NC. At the January membership meeting, we will be discussing these organizational issues and asking PA’s membership to vote in favor of moving forward in this direction, and making the necessary Share
