The Chhattisgarh Housing Board (CGHB) launched its ambitious

housing scheme ‘Atal Vihar Yojana’ on June 26, 2012.

Atal Vihar Yojana is a residential scheme named after

Mr. Atal Bihari Vajpayee, a former Prime Minister of India.

This project was earlier named as Vikas Nagar Yojana. Atal Vihar Yojana was the largest Chhattisgarh Yojana which was a

preplanned housing scheme since the state of Chhattisgarh came into being on

November 01, 2000.

The Chhattisgarh Housing Board constructed 100,000 houses at 40 locations in the state under

Atal Vihar Yojana at an estimated cost of Rs. 11,800 crore.

In the first year, the Chhattisgarh Housing Board constructed 30,000 houses at block and

district headquarters. In the second year, 40,000 houses were built.

Under this Chhattisgarh Yojana, a subsidy of Rs. 40,000 for an LIG (Lower Income Group)

housing unit and Rs. 80,000 for a EWS residential unit was provided.

The Chhattisgarh government also provided land to the Chhattisgarh Housing Board for

executing the project at the rate of one rupee per square foot.

The Chhattisgarh Housing Board had earlier launched a residential scheme ‘Atal Awas Yojana’

for the EWS (Economically Weaker Section) category of the society having an annual income

of less than Rs. 60,000.

Under the scheme, LIG houses worth Rs 7 lakh was available at Rs 6 lakh only

and EWS houses worth Rs 5.5 lakh at Rs 4 lakh only.

For the purpose, Naya Raipur Development Authority (NRDA) provided plots to the

Housing Board at a nominal rate of Re 1 per sq ft under the scheme meant for year 2015

only.

Under this Chhattisgarh Yojana, subsidy was increased from Rs 80,000 to Rs 1 lakh

for EWS houses while for LIG; it was hiked from Rs 40,000 to Rs 50,000.

The quality of construction is up to the mark and to minimize the construction cost,

negotiations should be done with cement and steel companies.

The Housing Board had set a target of constructing one lakh affordable houses in the

state over the next four years. Besides, the Board constructed toilets in 100 girls' schools

under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.
