Windows Phone Statistics Report

The big change this month is that, after almost three years at the top (since July 2013), the 520 is no longer the most popular Windows Phone device in use. That title now falls to the Lumia 535.

Windows 10 generation phones are still nowhere to be seen in the top 10 including such previous Windows Phone strongholds as Italy, Russia or India. The only bright spot is UK where Lumia 550 has gained some momentum.

In addition to the US we look in detail at the devices in use in the UK, Italy, Russia, Australia and India.

Data Source

This report is based on data collected from around 5,000 Windows phone appsrunning AdDuplex SDK v.2 (and higher). The raw data analyzed was collected over theday of April 25th, 2016 (UTC time) unless otherwise stated.

We have made every attempt to consolidate different reported phone model namesunder their canonical retail model names, but it is possible that some of the rare modelname variations were not accounted for.

It’s been a long time coming but, as predicted last month, the Lumia 520 is no longer the most popular Windows Phone in use around the world. It lost 0.8% market share in the last month while the 535 gained 0.5% to overtake it.

The largest other notable change is in the growth of the 640 which is up 1.0%.The 640XL also shows the largest growth among the other models in the top ten.

The Lumia manufacturers (Nokia/Microsoft) see another loss this month as they lose 0.18% of market share.

HTC also have a loss (of 0.04%) while all the others see a gain in share:Samsung +0.06%Huawei +0.06%BLU +0.02 %Other 0.08%

On the other hand all of these changes are within statistically insignificant range.

OS Versions – Worldwide April 25th, AdDuplex

As expected, we see a decline in share for WP8.1 (of 2.0%) and a gain in share for W10M (of 1.5%).

Somewhat unexpectedly we also see growth in market share for WP8.0 (0.1%) and WP7.x (0.3%)This would seem to suggest that not all the people leaving WP8.1 are upgrading to W10M while those using devices that have an OS two or three generations old are continuing to use them.

US has a new number one Windows phone. Lumia 640 had some sales momentum just recently and topped the former leader (Lumia 635) to take the crown this month.

UK is the only country in this report to feature a Windows 10 Mobile “native” phone in the top 10. Lumia 550 enters the cart at #7 with respectable 5.4% market share.

Other notable changes is the growth of Lumia 640 (up 5.3% since December) and the drop in Lumia 630 popularity (down 1.8%).

Since January, the largest changes in market share have come for the Lumia 640 which is up 1.6% and now the third most popular device. The 640XL see the next largest growth gaining 0.6%.

The big fallers are the 625 which is down 1.2% and the 520 which is down 1.1%

In the last two months, the trend at the top, in Russia, has continued.The 630 is down 1.3%The 535 is down 0.6%The 640 is up 2.2%

The 640 is the only device in the top ten to gain in share although the ‘other’ group is up 1.2%

The biggest decline is of 1.5% and is for the 520.

We last looked at Australia in December. Since then, the Lumia 640 has seen a tremendous boost in popularity and gained a massive 12.4 percent of share.
