July. A time of fun, family, friends—and freedom. With Independence Day around the corner, people find themselves reflecting on and honoring those who have fought for that freedom. A recent event held at Touchmark gave people the opportunity to do just that.

Central Oregon community members gathered at Touchmark for an inspiring presentation of Honor Flight, a documentary about four living World War II veterans and a town coming together to give them the trip of a lifetime to see the Washington, DC, memorials. Sid Poe, a Touchmark resident, cohosted the presentation to raise awareness about Honor Flights and the race against time that is happening around the nation and right here in Central Oregon.

“World War II survivors are leaving us every day. Our biggest challenge is finding veterans to put on the plane so we can honor their legacy and thank them for their service.”

Sid grew up in a military family and often heard his father’s stories about serving in World War II and Korea. A US Air Force Vietnam-era veteran, Sid himself served four years. He later went on to work with AT&T for more than 30 years, but he has always deeply valued and appreciated veterans and military families.

Nonprofit honors vetsAfter moving with his wife Lisa from Florida to Bend, Sid became involved with Bend Heroes Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to funding Honor Flights for World War II veterans living in Central and Eastern Oregon and Portland.

Honor Flights arranged through Bend Heroes Foundation are four-day trips, including travel to and from Washington, DC, visits to the World War II Memorial and other memorials, a presentation at Arlington National Cemetery, and a tour of the United States Capitol led by Oregon lawmakers.

In 2013 and just last month, Sid had the privilege of joining an Honor Flight as a guardian, a volunteer who helps veterans with

their physical and emotional needs throughout the trip. During the recent Touchmark event, Sid said being able to experience an Honor Flight personally really drives home the significance of what these veterans did for our country.

“It was a very emotional experience for all of us, and being involved with this effort has made me appreciate even more what my dad did so many years ago.”

If you read the title and said to yourself, wait a minute, it’s July: July is the time to celebrate independence and unification. As countries and as individuals, we are keenly attracted to the notion of independence. Research tells us that it’s our lifestyle—things we do and choices we make—that determines how we will age.

According to research done at California State University, Fullerton by C. Jessie Jones and Roberta E. Rikli, a key element in maintaining independence later in life is sustaining one’s “fitness capacity (strength, endurance, agility, and balance).” Simple, right? So why declare interdependence? Because life happens. Appointments, other priorities, injuries, and many other reasons all serve to interfere with or distract our attention from exercise. Encouragement and accountability can be essential to sticking with a fitness program.

In our office, several team members go to the local YMCA to exercise at noon. Sometimes, we join a group exercise class together, and other days we each do an individual program; regardless, we check in with each other. We carpool. We rearrange schedules.

During this month when we celebrate unity and independence, ask someone to start a walking group with you. Join a class. Walk around the corner and visit a friend. Ask a Life Enrichment/Wellness team member about steps you could take with others to improve your fitness capacity.

Declare interdependence—and gain more independence!
