Russian shawls are loosely worn over the shoulders, upper

body and arms, and sometimes also over the head. It is

usually a rectangular or square piece of cloth, that is often

folded to make a triangle but can also be triangular in

shape.

In Russia there is a whole tradition of shawls, and if you

are to look at old historical photos of Russian women they

sometimes wear them. Here we have some photos from

their production and also Russian ladies wearing them.

There are a few factories in Russia which make them, this particular one was

founded in 1795, so it’s over 200 year old now and has its own original

traditional pattern, sort of a trademark.

However, each time they improvise a new variation of the pattern and this is

where the production starts – with creating the new ornamental sketches.

As soon as the black and white outlined sketch is ready, the colorists start

improvising with colors so that it will match their traditional palette.

The problem with choosing

colors is that the true colors

only develop after the shawl

is treated with hot vapor, so

until then they can’t be sure

if they have the color right.

Sometimes, there are different batches of those being printed at once

with slight color variations so that later they can choose the right one.

The printing process is manual.
