When it comes to fashion, there’s no denying that the best dressed amongst us are also the ones with the best imagination, and who are willing to wear whatever they want with confidence. When you normally buy clothes, where do you go? To the high street, probably. When you want to look different, though, there’s no point going to the high streets, because you won’t find those unusual items there. Instead, you need to think outside of the box. Go to your local charity shops and have a good root around. Some of the things that people throw away will hugely surprise you. Seriously, bargain hunters have found old Channel handbags, Mary Quant dresses, and all sorts of things.

Tip 1: Get Looking In the Un-Usual Places

You probably won’t find such great finds as that, but we’re certain that you'll find a few cool things, such as Ikon bowling shoes, or nana’s 1920s long gloves. All of these offer the opportunity to act as fantastic accessories. You can, of course, also find some signature pieces, such as dresses, trousers, and tops. Get over any aversions you have to wearing second-hand clothes, because the charity shops really do have some diamonds in the rough.

If you’re reading this, then we’re guessing that you’re in the UK. If so, this is a fantastic opportunity to get yourself down to London. There are a number of places that are viewed as iconic when it comes to individual fashions. If you’ve never been to Camden Market, Brick Lane, or Carnaby Street, then you are massively missing out. There is so much to explore in all of these places. In fact, you might need to book an overnight stay, because we doubt you’ll get to see everything you want to.

Tip 2: Go To the Trendy Places

Yes, we understand that this sounds completely counterintuitive: how can you dress individually if when you’re copying someone else’s style? Well, to learn to be an individual, you first have to learn the very basics of the fashion world, and to do this, you need to copy. Choose a fashion icon that you love, but that also has some type of quirk. This quirk must suit you too. For example, if you choose to copy Kate Moss, here quirk is the festival look, so it would be better for you if you also like festivals. This way, you can be authentic, and being authentic is a huge factor in being able to pull of your fashion ideas in style. If you don’t feel comfortable, you won’t look good. It’s as simple as that.

Finally, if you’re a dab hand with a sewing machine, you can always try changing your own clothing. There are a lot of things that you can do here, and the sky is the limit…or rather, your imagination is the limit. For instance, you can create your own Ikon bowling shoes by repainting a pair of your old bowling shoes (if you have some). You have to do a proper job, though. Otherwise, you might look individual, but it will be way off the mark!
