What exactly does the internet mean?TheInternetis a global system of interconnectedcomputer networksthat use the standardInternet protocol suite(TCP/IP) to link several billion devices worldwide. It is an internationalnetwork of networksthat consists of millions of private, public, academic, business, and governmentpacket switchednetworks, linked by a broad array of electronic, wireless, and optical networking technologies. The Internet carries an extensive range of information resources and services, such as the inter-linkedhypertext documents andapplicationsof theWorld Wide Web(WWW), theinfrastructureto support email, andpeer-to-peernetworks forfile sharingandtelephony. More than 100 countries are linked into exchanges ofdata, news and opinions. According toInternet World Stats, as of December 31, 2011 there was an estimated 2,267,233,742 Internet users worldwide. The number of Internet users represents 32.7 percent of the world's population.

Link between the IP address & Domain NameThe IP address and domain name are two different identities, but their roles are same to the world. They are connected and supporting each other, the IP address needs the domain name to function properly. So does to domain name, it cannot go online without connecting to IP address.

Whats a Data packet?Whats packet switching?A packet is a basic unit of communication over a digital network. A packet is also called a datagram, a segment, a block, a cell or a frame, depending on theprotocol. When data has to be transmitted, it is broken down into similar structures of data, which are reassembled to the original data chunk once they reach their destination.

Packet switching is whereprotocolsin which messages are divided intopackets before they are sent. Each packet is then transmitted individually and can even follow different routes to its destination. Once all the packets forming a message arrive at the destination, they are recompiled into the original message.

Function of a router Theroutersdetermine where to send information from one computer to another. Routers are specialized computers that send your messages and those of every other Internet user speeding to their destinations along thousands of pathways.
