How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts? Comparing my digipak to another reggae music artist’s, I am able to see that mine meets some of the conventions within this genre. Firstly the front of Bob Marley’s digipak is simple and just has a photograph of him (The main singer) where it also has his name and album title clearly displayed. The front is legible and the whole design is simple and minimalistic. However on another reggae album it is colourful and is busy, which are also conventions my digipak photos meet. The background of Bob Marley’s album is unnoticeable due to his dreadlocks so with the fact that Tom doesn’t have this stereotypical Jamaican styled hair, I made the background busy and contains the Rasta colours, maintaining the reggae feel. I still wanted Tom to stand out more compared to the background so then it does relate more to the Bob Marley and other reggae albums. I also didn’t feel the need to have a lot of writing as Tom (much like Bob Marley) speaks for himself. The rear of my digipak is similar to Bob Marley’s due to the fact both our songs are centrally aligned and both demonstrate the copy right information and barcode at the bottom. The colours however on Bob Marley’s back cover are simple and the whole design is minimalistic, but mine is the complete opposite. I decided to have the tree theme so then it relates to the main song and my music video ‘Time Will Tell’. This is relevant as one of my locations was in the forest. Unlike Bob Marley’s gold on purple font, I choose a light pink as I found this colour stood out against the busy/colourful background.

The spine of my Digipak contains the iconic Bob Marley symbol of a lion. I wanted to use this so then people would notice it was a reggae album due to the connotations. I also repeated Toms name and the title of the album much like on the front. I also decided on a light grey colour as this colour blended the front and back covers nicely. It also is similar to Bob Marley’s album spine.

I’m comparing my poster to another reggae poster it shows that both are rather colourful however mine is more simplistic with a clear white, bold font whereas the other poster is busy and got much more information on it then mine does. Bob Marley’s poster has an action shot of him and a lot of large bold text. It has a black back ground however this is distracted by the colourful writing everywhere. On the other hand my poster has a bright, eye-catching background (which I drew) with the intention to add stereotypical reggae/Rasta colours in. This is much like the colours used in Bob Marley’s poster. As my poster is more modern I decided to include social media logos, clearly this wouldn’t have been a thing in 1963. Once again my artists name is in big letters and so is the title. This is much like the reggae poster as it evidently shows Marley’s name. I have used the same font in my digipak to keep the fluidity of my adverts and also used one of the same digipak images in order to create the poster. I did however edit the poster to make it brighter and changed it to portrait so it was different and more like a poster.

Comparing my video to another reggae music video from Etana, titled ‘Reggae’, I’ve found that my music video doesn’t really conform to the genre conventions. First my music video is performance, which is similar to ‘Reggae’ however Etana’s video is more narrative showing a story.

She does film in the in a forest and on a street much like more however mine wasn’t a narrative.

The example music video has flashback to a previous part in the two main characters relationships which is very different to mine. The pace of the example video is quicker than mine and has much more cuts. There are also references to the Rasta colours and stereotypical Jamaican things such as the style of hair and the instruments used. The similarities of videos are that in the majority of her music video she is performing.

Linking my video to my Digipak, Poster and Music video, I feel they work well together as they do have some similar conventions to the reggae genre. I think that the music video makes people happy (which was my aim) and I also wanted this to be the case in my digipak and poster. This is why I decided to make them both bright/colourful and have busy elements. I used similar themes for all three products I with reference to some locations and using the same image for part of the poster and digipak. I feel that the end result would work well on the open market, as all conform to the genre conventions but also challenges them.
