In 2010, Harry Styles auditioned as a solo artist for the British television series ‘The X Factor’. After being eliminated as a solo performer, he was brought back into the competition, along with four other contestants to form the group that would later become known as ‘One Direction’.At this stage of his life, before his later fame in 2010 he was a quiet sixteen year old who worked part time in a local bakery. Now he is in the most well known boy band along with bandmates Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson. They have grown and changed as a band as they have released four commercially successful albums, performed on a worldwide tour, and won several awards, including two BRIT Awards and four MTV Video Music Awards.

One reason to why some singers appearance may change over time is that their music changes, for example Miley Cyrus started as a singer for a younger audience where as now she is seen as much different artist as her videos have turned into much more sexual videos. For example her two videos ‘the climb’ and ‘wrecking ball’ are both very different, one being an older song of hers, and the other being a much newer one. Her image has changed very quickly and very differently.

The images show the transformation Miley has been through. You can see in the image on the left that the clothing she wears becomes more revealing and her makeup becomes more detailed.

Harry Styles change over time hasn’t been as sudden as the previous example of Miley Cyrus but he has also changed his appearance to suit his audience who have also grown up. For example when ‘One direction’ first came about he was a young teenager who had the audience of young girls where as now he has grown up and so has his audience which means his appearance has also developed. As seen clearly in these photos, the way he dresses has been a big change.

He wears sunglasses which is seen as ‘cool and expensive’

Again, he wears more ‘cool’ clothes then he used to because of the fame and money he has had over the years.

When ‘One direction’ began, Harry wore a basic t-shirt which is typical for a young teen.
