In 2013 dating app Grindr (designed for gay people) found its match in dating app Tinder (which is created for

both straight and gay people). Yet the underlying principles have remained the same: with a single virtual

scan your real-time environment becomes a date palooza. Users click the “hear” button and then wait if

they find their match.Tinder’s promotion video illustrates this well. It shows

happy singles who make eye contact in real life and then later on find each other on the app.

However, more often than not, that is not how it goes. But the most heard critique is that it’s all about

appearances, stimulating a culture of narcissism even further.

On the other hand, one could say that it is merely Future Onlife in full effect.

Note: it is also possible to bribe a date with another app…

pillow that has been created by a Japanese professor that can feign hugs, all with a mere touch on your

smartphone.

American company Smart PJ has developed smart pyjamas, whereby sets of dots on the clothing can be

scanned with a smartphone to activate a story (every set of dots triggers a different story).

The blur between online and offline clearly comes together in this example. The danger of devices like

these is what Sherry Turkle terms as “alone together”. In this era of social media, although we are more

connected online than ever before, more and more people feel lonely.

There was a time when backpacking meant “getting away from it all”. In present day society however, more

and more people are going flashpacking. Flashpacking is a combination of flashy, as in “fancy”,

merged with the act of backpacking. Or more simply defined, it implies backpacking with a bigger budget. This

development goes hand in hand with the notion that handheld technology is becoming cheaper by the minute.

Accordingly so, travelling old style and going completely analogue seems to have become a relic of the past.
