Introduction:

Ravi Namboori, a Cisco evangelist and an IT entrepreneur, California discusses as to how Copy Data Management can be managed better and how to manage data more efficiently i.e Efficient Data Storage.

This PPT endeavors to explain how copy data management practices can bring about changes in our workplaces. Creation of more space to operate in is one of its main benefits. And it discusses on how it is possible for us to manage our data better. This has been written keeping the problem of data explosion that is on the verge of becoming a menace.

Copy Data Management:

When we talk about data explosion, providing larger storage space is the solution to manage it.

It’s being caused by inefficient practice of Copy Data Management.

International Data Corporation, a market research firm, states that copy data comprises over 60% of the entire enterprise disk capacity globally. It also adds that by the year 2020, expenditure incurred for copy data storage could reach $50 billion, and this alone would consume more than 315 million terabytes (TB) of space!!

Copy Data Management:

If we look at testing and development workflows, numerous code applications copies are generated in several locations, where several teams' access and use it. Each team then snapshots it, replicates it, and backs it up on disks, tapes, etc. At the time of this process coming to an end, we end up with couple of extra copies of the same data.

Database administrators then usually resort to practices, such as replicating the original database.

Following that, the storage infrastructure department protects data by snapshotting it and replicating it. Then, the restore and backup departments procure the database data for exporting it into the media they choose.

Continues… Few firms are trying to helps in the exponential growth of copy

data. Simultaneously, they are minimizing the expensive process of data consumption by platforms, which have been created expressly to reproduce the data.

Ex: Actifio and Hitachi Data Corporation Copy data management does not mean just reducing data copies,

it also entails doing away with them, if possible forever.

Efficient Data StorageHave you had any idea as to how much of our primary data is properly organized?

Only 15 to 20% of the data is structured!!!else is not!!

Occupation of less space, resulting in less time being wasted.

Most of the unstructured data is reportedly old or obsolete data.

Data Explosion Problems Data does not suddenly explode instantly. It is accrued over time

& we don't keep track of it!! Another problem with data explosion is Data Duplication, which

leads to shrinkage of our storage space. For that need to keep in check proliferation of data.

Secure Data Management

The first step should be archiving -YES!!!

We archive data by sourcing, tagging, and adding in new data sets by placing stubs behind them. If a blanket rule is enforced across the board in our environment

that one must start placing a stub behind every file that we have not seen for over 3-4 months, it would bring about a major change.

We would logically transfer the obsolete data to a secure and a solid platform in order to retain it and for retrieving whenever we need.

Conclusion After all, data management is a very crucial issue that needs to be

addressed on a priority basis. One instance of data archiving based on a single criterion would

get rid of data from the data protection path and every workflow. As our space to work on is increased, it will have a domino effect on the performance of almost our entire file systems.

If we start archiving on a permanent basis with the aid of copy data management, most of our data management challenges can be overcome.
