Tumor Markers - Growing Market 2022
Submitted By Nikki Heinekar
What is Tumor MarkersDefinition –
A tumor marker is a biomarker found in blood, urine, or body tissues that can be elevated by the presence of one or more types of cancer. There are many different tumor markers, each indicative of a particular disease process, and they are used in oncology to help detect the presence of cancer.
A tumor marker is a substance that is produced by the body in response to cancer, or is produced by the cancer itself.
Some of these markers are specific to one cancer, while others are seen in several types of cancer. These markers are generally used to evaluate the patient's response to treatment or to monitor for
recurrence (return of the cancer after treatment). There are non-cancerous conditions that can cause markers to be elevated, so these must also be
considered when interpreting the test results.
Common Tumor Markers CA15-3 is a sensitive tumor marker for breast cancer. CA19-9 antigen has been shown to be elevated in the blood of some patients with
gastrointestinal tumors. CA-125 is a useful marker for monitoring disease progression in ovarian cancers. PSA is a useful marker for monitoring disease progression in prostate cancers. CEA (carcinoembryonic antigen) is useful in monitoring patients with various types of
malignancies, such as gastrointestinal, pancreatic, breast, and lung cancers.

Uses Tumor markers can be used in conjunction with other tests (scans, biopsies, etc.) to help
diagnose a patient who has symptoms suspicious for cancer.
Some markers can help physicians to determine prognosis and treatment.
Markers could be used as a screening tool for the general public. The goal of a screening test is to diagnose cancer early, when it is the most treatable and before it has had a chance to grow and spread.
