Every second, someone in the world needs blood.

That some could be a mother giving birth, an accident victim, a girl suffering from life-

threatening anaemia, a boy with dengue fever, a father facing open heart surgery...

Thanks to the selfless contribution of blood donors who gave their blood voluntarily,

these patients received the gift of life.

Evidence from around the world shows that voluntary, non- remunerated blood donors

are the foundation of a safe blood supply because they are least likely to transmit

potentially life-threatening infection from HIV , hepatitis, and other viruses , through

their blood. They are also more likely to give blood regularly, enabling safe blood to be

made readily availabe to all patients requiring blood transfusion. It is to these unsung

heroes that World Blood Donor Day is dedicated.

Join us and saying thank you to these special people with a thank-you note, which will be

tied to a beanie bear and presented to blood donors on 14 June. You can mail your note

We need a 1 environment so we can live healthy lives and leave

future generations a healthy Earth. There have been changes in the

environment in every time period but the 2 and most negative changes

are happening today. A lot of groups and people are doing everything they

can to raise awareness about the importance of a clean environment and

to make the 3 healthier. Unfortunately, it just isn't enough. The only

way we are going to achieve a clean environment is if everyone works 4

to take care of our planet.

There are 5 easy steps you can take to help create a clean

environment and a 6 planet including the following ideas: Do what

you can to simplify your life whenever possible, Use less 7 that come

from trees in your home and at work, If you can have less trash come out

of your home, the landfills will not be so overflowing for future

generations, Another way to contribute to a clean environment is to take

steps to get less junk mail so the 8 don't get sent to landfills. Also, you

can buy reusable 9 bags for all your shopping needs so you don't use

plastic and paper bags that just get thrown away.

It is easy to take steps to create a clean environment. If everyone

makes a few small changes, it will have a big 10 on our environment.

We all need to be focused on creating a clean environment.

There are several easy steps you can take to help create a clean environment and a

healthier planet including the following ideas:

Do what you can to simplify your life whenever possible. The simpler your life the

more you are contributing to a clean environment. One way to do this is to use

what you have and not buy things that you really do not need. That will help you

create less waste that has to go into our already full landfills. The less waste we all

create the better off the environment will be.

Use less products that come from trees in

your home and at work. This is referred to as having

a tree-free home. Using less tree products will mean

more trees will be saved and that leads to better air

quality. Easy ways to use less tree products include

using rags instead of paper towels, cloth napkins instead of paper ones, using

toilet paper that contains at least 80% recycled waste, using both sides of papers

you have and print in your home, and only using wood in your home that is easily

renewed.

If you can have less trash come out of your home, the landfills will not be so

overflowing for future generations. You can do this by purchasing products with

as little packaging as possible and recycling as much of your waste as possible.

Also, buying only what you need will lead to less trash and that will help the

environment.

Activity 1Read the article!

How To Save The Environment

Throughout the evolution of the

Homo sapien we have used the land to

fulfill our needs. During this millennia the

Homo sapien has increased its

mistreatment of the environment by

continually polluting or destroying the land,

causing the genocide of many animals. The environment cannot be saved when

people don't change. You cannot just be a vegetarian and think you are

protecting the animals. You cannot just shoot deer for population control. You

cannot farm every bit of land.

To save the environment we have to go primal. We have to reinforce the

food chain. When pioneers started shooting everything, the balance between

Page 30: Book of English for Public Health

Let’s to be Health

30 |English for Public Health

predator and prey was ruined . We should, for example, reintroduce the natural

predators of deer, the wolf, instead of shooting deer ourselves.

We need to stabilize the earth's hunger situation by farming for the global

populace instead of for each individual country.

We must ration the global produce instead of overindulging or starving

others. We must stop countries half the size of the U.S. from having ten to fifteen

times the population.

We must stabilize and minimize the human populace and reshape without

polluting the present environmental conditions to save the world.

Activity 2Check (✓) True or False for each statement according the text.

Statement True False

1. The environment cannot be saved whenpeople do change.

2. When pioneers started shooting everything, the balance between predator and prey wasruined.

3. Reintroduce the natural predators of deer, the wolf, fish, instead of shooting deerourselves.

4. We must not stop countries half the size ofthe U.S. from having ten to fifteen times thepopulation.

5. We must farm land good for farming insteadof destroying forests to produce food for afew years and ruin the land forever.

Activity 2Circle T if the statement is true and F if it is false based on the text below

Water, Sanitation, Hygiene

Every year, some 2 million people die from diarrheal diseases. Much of this disease

burden is caused by contaminated drinking water and inadequate sanitation. Although

the vital role of safe water and sanitation in maintaining health has been recognized for

centuries, many families—especially those in the developing world—still lack adequate

services. Increasing coverage is a key development priority.

The Millennium Development Goals targets include halving the number of people

without sustainable access to safe water and basic sanitation by the year 2015. Having

safe drinking water is usually defined as having an “improved” water supply— that is, a

water supply that is protected from contamination by pathogens and other illness

causing contaminants. Given the known importance of water, sanitation, and hygiene, a

key question is which interventions in these areas work best to bring about sustainable

improvements in health.

Analytical work at the Bank has included a meta-analysis of water, sanitation and

hygiene interventions; several toolkits on school sanitation, rural water supply and

sanitation (WSS), and gender issues in WSS; and papers and studies on sanitation and

hygiene promotion issues. More recently, cost benefit analysis of different interventions

is being carried out in country environmental analyses (CEAs). In addition, lending

projects in the WSS sector are incorporating sanitation and hygiene considerations,

Page 45: Book of English for Public Health

Let’s to be Health

including the recent use of environmental health indicators (such as reduction in

diarrheal incidences, hand washing practice etc).

1. T F Every 2 years, some 2 million people die from diarrheal diseases

2. T F Much of this disease burden is caused by virus and bacteria

3. T F Family in the developing world still lack adequate services

4. T F Given the known importance of water, sanitation, and hygiene is

best to bring about sustainable improvements in health.
