Introduction• Is the no.1 tragedy in Sri Lanka (Epidemiology Unit Ministry of Health 2013)
• 600,000 hospitalizations per year (Trauma Secretariat 2014)
• On average 6 deaths per day
• Causes more average deaths per day than the North-East civil war
• Western province
• 61% total RTA
• 41% fatal RTA injuries

ObjectivesGeneral objective: To determine the first aid and CPR knowledge and
practices of police officer in Colombo and Gampaha
Specific objectives
• To assess the first aid and CPR knowledge of police officers
• To evaluate the practice of first aid and CPR in RTAs
Methodology• A descriptive quantitative research
• Population- Police officers of Colombo and Gampaha areas
• Sample- 493 police officers
• Sampling method- Convenience sampling
• Data collection
• Self-administered questionnaire
• 31 item questionnaire

Discussion• In general, 30-50 age group had the least knowledge regarding first aid
and CPR
• Overall knowledge of management of fractures was unsatisfactory in
all age groups
• First aid practices for bleeding was not appropriately applied
Recommendations• Workshops should be done to train the police officers
• To individual stations
• Focused on 30-50 age group
