I am 40 years old. 5 years ago I got a breast implant (Silicone gel implant). I have not
experienced any discomfort since then. I intent to get a breast cancer screening soon
but am concerned that the breast implant may tamper with the screening result. Is it
true? Which screening method is most accurate? (Ms Ngoc Bich – 40)
Regular health check is highly advisable for women in their 40s for early Breast Cancer
Detection. Your breast implant would have no effect on the accuracy of radiology tests. The
two most common Breast Cancer Screening methods are breast ultrasound and
mammography. During a mammography procedure, the breast is compressed under such
pressure that the breast implant pocket may be ruined. However, without enough pressure,
cancerous breast lump may not be detected. Therefore, before getting a breast cancer
screening, inform your doctor about your breast implant.
