• The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were set at the 2000 Millennium Summit to accelerate global progress in development. Sexual and reproductive health is a prerequisite of all goals, particularly those related to gender and health. The most direct link is with MDG 5 of improving maternal health.

Some 140 million women worldwide who are married or in union say they would like to delay pregnancy, but are not using contraception. A woman in sub-Sahara Africa has a 1 in 6 chance of dying in pregnancy or childbirth, compared to a 1 in 4,000 risk in a developing country. Improving the health and nutrition of mothers-to-be and providing quality reproductive health services are pivotal to addressing many underlying causes of child mortality.

In eastern Asia north Africa and south Asia maternal mortality has declined by two thirds.The maternal mortality ratio in developing regions is still 15 times higher than in non-developed regions.Life spring hospitals to provide 82,000 women with affordable healthcare.

A woman dies every minute-about 529,000 a year- vas majority of them in developing countries.By 2015 the millennium development goals hope to achieve universal access to reproductive health eg:-contraceptive prevalence rate-adolescent birth rate -antenatal care coverage-unmet need for family planning

• In 2008, 63% of women aged 15–49 years who were married or in a consensual union were using some form of contraception, while 11% wanted to stop or postpone childbearing but were not using contraception.• Over the past few years in

certain regions 81% of women in developing

countries were now having their babies delivered by

skilled people, which reduced the chance of the baby or the

mother dying during childbirth.

• In three of the six regions increased coverage is needed in certain regions, such as the African region where it still remains under 50%.

• One of the most effective ways of decreasing deaths of mothers in childbirth is to decrease the number of teen pregnancies by educating both young boys and girls, as teen girls bodies may not be able for pregnancy.
