4CX1 Codamotion units:

Optoelectronic system allowing 3D localization of active markers placed on different parts of the body (knee, ankle, great trochanter, pelvis, foot…)

Quantification of the orientation and rotation of the body segments

• Racetrack (technical floor) of 35 meters long

• 4 Coda motion units allowing Kinematic measurement of all directions of the motion

• Joint angle trajectories calculated by combination of the information (orientation and rotation) of adjacent segments

• Measures performed by comparison between both limbs and also with reference to a healthy population

• Active markers emitting their own infrared light avoid signal misinterpretation but limit the number of markers used simultaneously and need to connect electric cable

• The frequency of data acquisition depends on the number of markers

56 markers limit the frequency to 100 Hz 6 markers limit the frequency to 800 Hz

Analysis of the gait cycle

The 3D Codamotion CX1 system is the gold standard in research-grade Lab and portable 3D motion analysis systems. It provides the user with marker accessories, analysis protocols and report templates that ensure consistent and reliable gait analyses every time.

Information that can be obtained:• Positions in space• Speeds of the legs• Rotations in different spatial axes• Angular velocities

Foot analysis during the gait cycle

Active-marker based technology -> high data reliability and minimal data processing time

Pression Force

Reaction Force

Lateral force

• 2 Force plates integrated in the walkway to measure ground reaction forces

(e.g. gait, jumping or running)

• The force plates can be moved (on rail) along the walkway

• Measures ground reaction differences between the two feet

2. Force plateforms

Information that can be obtained:• Pushing forces according to the three spatial axes• Ground contact time

ARTIALIS S.A., 11 Avenue de l’Hôpital, Sart-Tilman, tour GIGA, 4000 LIEGE – Belgium Tel : 0032(0)4 2427706 – Fax : 0032(0)4 2427728

Kistler piezoelectric force platforms:

• Measure the ground reaction forces and moments as a person moves across them• Enables clinicians to fully assess the external forces acting on a person, to the internal muscle

and joint contact forces via musculoskeletal modeling• Can be synchronized with the Coda motion capture system• Platforms are portable allowing to reposition the platform on the walkway to obtain data from

various activities (walking, running, up and down stairs…)

Left Leg

• 16 Surface wireless electrodes attached to the skin overlying the muscle belly

• Measure up to 16 muscles without interfering with locomotion

• Muscle function can be evaluated through the analysis of the timing and amplitude of the electrical activity coinciding with force generation during the gait analysis

• Muscles recruitment and control for the achievement of specific movements

3. Electromyography

Information that can be obtained:• Muscle contraction relative intensity

Muscular activity assessment during gait

ARTIALIS S.A., 11 Avenue de l’Hôpital, Sart-Tilman, tour GIGA, 4000 LIEGE – Belgium Tel : 0032(0)4 2427706 – Fax : 0032(0)4 2427728

Biofeedback applications:

• Training of specific muscles

• Ergonomic assessments that establish the degree to which muscles contract or relax

• Biomechanics investigations that determine the role that individual muscles have in contribution to joint torque

• …

Comparing muscles activation intervals of a pathological gait from a patient before or after treatment reveals how the duration of contractions and the timing changes

• Dynamometric measure of the maximal force couple developed by a muscular group during a volunteer dynamic contraction

• Variable resistance instantly adapts to the strength of torque developed by the muscle group studied on the entire range of motion and at a predetermined constant speed thanks to electromagnetic brakes

• Allows rehabilitation and muscle reconditioning of peripheral joints and spine

• Objectively determine the strength, velocity and fatigability parameters for different muscle groups by comparison side-by-side in order to demonstrate an imbalance or weakness

4. Isokinetic evaluations

ARTIALIS S.A., 11 Avenue de l’Hôpital, Sart-Tilman, tour GIGA, 4000 LIEGE – Belgium Tel : 0032(0)4 2427706 – Fax : 0032(0)4 2427728

Rehabilitation exercises as isokinetic tests are critical to restore efficient range of motion, reduce the levels of muscle weakening and imbalances, eliminate bad postural behaviors and maintain good coordination.

Moreover, isokinetic programs are recommended as resistance training on patients with articular cartilage injury due to the speed and smoothness of the movement decreasing the stress.

These exercises can significantly help in pain control and improving quality of life of the patient.

Fixing the speed allows maximum neuromuscular contraction

High security in case of pain and Decrease the risk of overload

Adapts to the muscular fatigue

Evaluations can be performed in eccentric or concentric mode

Allow the evaluation of both muscular and articular pathologies provoking limitations in movement

Tests protocols are selected in function of the pathology and the deficit to measure

Results interpretation can be done in function of various parameters:-> force-speed relation, instantaneous analysis of force moments curve, bilateral comparison, comparison to standards

Allow the assessment of various parts of the body:-> shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, ankle or lumbar spine

For the knee joint evaluation, a surface electromyography EMG can be added for the study of muscles recruitment, the beginning and the end of activation of the muscles of interest
