This stage occurs before Type 2 diabetes takes place.

The blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be considered diabetes.

79 million people in the United States carry prediabetes.

Recent research has shown that damage to the body, especially the heart and circulatory system are already affected in this stage.

3 different tests: AC1, Fasting Plasma Glucose (FPG) and the Oral Glucose Test (OGTT)

Usually diagnosed in children & young adults.

Also known as “Juvenile Diabetes.”

The pancreas does not produce insulin

Beta cells are destroyed. Only 5% of people with diabetes

carry this form of the disease. Insulin Therapy is usually the

primary choice for treatment. Insulin is injected into the body to

Most common form. Millions of Americans carry

this form & don’t know they do.

Most common in African-Americans, Latinos, Asian Americans and Native Americans.

The body does not produce enough insulin or the cells ignore the insulin.

The glucose builds up in the blood instead of going into the cells.

Some develop this form in the later stage of their pregnancy.

Women who has developed gestational diabetes is most likely to develop Type 2 within 5-10 years.

About 3-8% of women develop this form.

Caused by the hormones of pregnancy or a shortage of insulin.

May not experience any symptoms.
