Whats Crowd2Map Tanzania?
Using local & satellite mapping to fight FGM Crowd2Map Tanzania
2016-09-22, HOT SummitEgle Marija Ramanauskaite Janet Chapman
Im Janet, Egle unfortunately cant be here. Volunteer with TDT and visit Tz twice a year. This is our Safe House in Mugumu, has protected over 400 girls from nearby villages since it opened less than 2 years ago.1
lucky meetup at Mozilla Festival 2015
test project to engage locals in crowdsourcing / citizen science
Data could be used to make a map!!!
How did Crowd2Map Tanzania come to be?
She was working on citizenscience projects. I complained about lack of maps in rural Tanzania and how communities there are affected by Deforestation, climate change, Suggested working together and Crowd2map was born.2
Were mapping rural Tanzania. Why?Tanzania Development Trust funds grassroots organisations in the poorest areas of rural Tanzania where there are no other international NGOs working.
Typical projects include bore holes for villages without water, solar for clinics so women dont have to give birth in the dark, desks so school children dont have to sit on the floor.
These remote villages are EXTREMELY poorly mapped.
Local officials lack maps of their area.
Sometime hand drawn map on wall, often not. Getting lost driving through rivers in the rain. Asked local reps to draw map of where village was, they couldnt3
Were mapping rural Tanzania. Why?
Urban Tanzania looks like this: (Dar es Salaam)
Thanks to great work of Ramani Huria who have supported us.4
Were mapping rural Tanzania. Why?
Egle was shocked to see rural Tanzania is blank in Google Maps.
Received important input from a GIS colleague: Its not blank in OSM!
But actuallyMost rural Tanzania looked like this when we started
When told Egle she didnt believe me how bad the maps were. Most still looks like this need stats for points added..

Were mapping rural Tanzania. Why?
Thanks to Missing Maps, some of it looked like this (Zeze, -4.8987578, 30.0577604)
Zeze village 8000 subsistence farmers, 42 km off grid, huge problems of water
first time I went completely blank, Nov 15 looks like above due to Missing maps project to map area around Burundi refugee camp added roads in Kigoma, but no village names or other amenities. So useless for finding a particular village but a great start..

Pilot project: EpiCollect+
Adding points on Epicollect, interest from fellow travellers on daladala etc7
Pilot project: EpiCollect+
People incentivized to add points by competition. 8
Locals learning to use OSM on laptops
People had never seen a map of their village but great interest in maps, demo OSM
EMR: you might get questions about these things. Like how did you train them? How many people? How many laptops? What editor? How did they do? Did you/they continue to do it ?9
Were mapping rural Tanzania. Why?
Locals have been mapping points of importance, worship places, shops, schools, community library
EMR: did you say anything about this ? I dont recall10
Focus: fighting FGM in Mugumu
Biggest project, outreach in villages, no maps 11
Transferring Gov Open Data to OSM
EMR: prepare for Qs about open data. Where did you get it from? Was it government-collected? Are you sure it is usable? Did you consider importing it straight to OSM (not manual)? Is that all the data you got? How recent is it? Are you still accessing other open data from elshwere ?12
Transferring Gov Open Data to OSM
EMR: how many volunteers? How did you engage them ?13
Finding a suitable mapping platform
EMR: Why did you start with Epicollect at all? (say it was for a pilot project, and it was an easily accessible platform for general data collection, suitable for less literate (easy to use app) users etc.)14
Mapping on Maps.me
Moved to maps.me
EMR: did you try other OSM apps ? Why not ?15
Mapping on Maps.me
Maps me brilliant now you can add points, but list not that suitable for rural Africa.. 16
Mapping Competition!
say more on Mapping competition how much are people contributing
EMR: how many people? How well are they engaging? Are the points accurate? Reliable ?17
Remote villages are still missing from maps Where are they ?
How are they called ?
How many people live there ?
Are they accessible by roads? Are there bridges?
Via Facebook, Whats app18
Inaccurate, duplicate entries
19
Communication: Facebook
Set up a FB group
EMR: dont forget to say it is useful for sharing screenshots of unidentified villages, which then can be identified by participants20
Communication: WhatsApp
And wa
EMR: is it effective for communicating with locals? Why? (Im sure you can provide many benefits :D )21
Satellite mapping via HOT Task Manager/project/1788
Set up project on HOT for area around Mugumu, 22
Triple mapping party, May 2016!
23
Satellite mapping events by volunteers
Dar
EMR: how did they come to be? How did these volunteers find you? Decide to map? Who trained them?24
Mugumu Safe House girls engaging in mapping themselves
Safe house
EMR: who trained them? How did they do? Do they continue mapping after the event?25
Continuing mapping after the event
Continuing mapping after the event Remarkable coverage compared to before 2016; Mara stands out in the map of Tanzania
Almost no buildings or roads mapped before we started working on the region. Peak during our mapathon, of course
EMR: you could get some wise-nerds explaining you how these new OSM analytics work, but just nod along I think :D it is irrelevant to the project. The stats are clear though.26

WinsReaching more girls in Mara via Mugumu Safe House
Discovery of remote villages
Reaching remote villages (limited roads, bridges)
Fuel planning
Better maps help girls reach the Safe House on their ownWere reaching places that weve never reached before
EMR: do girls actually use handed out maps? Were there actual villages Rhobis team didnt know about? Can you give more details of how they used the maps? (Just thinking what mean/detailed questions they might ask )30

You said something about the validators, but its not on the slide 33
FriendsThank You !Volunteers
Add/delete as you see fit! I only care that ExCiteS (Muki) be in here, since he helped us set up the project & mapathon, and Technarium, since they have been very supportive of the idea and want to host more mapathons
We should say thank you to all volunteers who have made this happen 34
