You see, my name is Lawrence and I am an addict.Be sure to visit our other Teenage Drug Abuse Articles below! Want updates? Enter your email on the right side of this page.

You never have to use again if you choose not to.

As a psychologist, I have helped to treat hundreds of teens and adults that are substance dependent. Clinically speaking, there are different theories about addiction. The disease concept is one of the theories. The American Medical Association deemed Alcoholism as a medical condition and a disease back in the 1950’s, yet many medical doctors, psychologists and professionals in the mental health field do not believe that it is in any shape, way or form, a disease. The definition of a disease is: A chronic, progressive terminal condition. An example of a

disease could be cancer or diabetes.

I have devoted the past 12 years as a professional examining the research on Substance Use Disorders and the nature of addiction. Alcoholism and substance addiction can be and needs to be viewed as the same issue because they both are mood and or mind altering agents; alcohol is a drug. There is a vast amount of evidence that shows that drug and alcohol use, abuse, and dependence is in every way, a disease. Not that it would make a difference if it is was not a disease just for the mere fact that it ruins lives. The facts are simply this: Addiction has been a worldwide problem for a very long time. It has wreaked havoc on individuals’ and families while destroying everything in its path.

I have been considered an “expert in the treatment of addictions” by many of my colleagues. Some of these colleagues are known throughout the world for their contribution as scientists that have worked in different areas of psychology other than addiction.

You see, my name is Lawrence and I am an addict. My job in life is to carry the message to any other addict/alcoholic that you never have to use again if you choose not to. However, I believe that treatment is the answer. Does it have to be a 12 step program? No. How about a rehabilitation facility? No. I will say that depending on the substance and the amount and time one has been using, it may be quite possible to seek medical attention. That is critical. Can I do it on my own? You can answer that one. I used hard drugs since the age of 14 until 40 and stopped when I was on my death bed. Personally, I had to learn how to use and personally, I have to learn how to recover. If I want to be a great musician, I have to surround myself with great players and learn how they do it. The same thing

applies to getting clean and sober and staying clean and sober. There are thousands of Psychologists at the doctoral level that would say that I am crazy to disclose this type of information. I am not proud of how I behaved and what I did during my active addiction. I am grateful that I was granted another way to live and decided to pursue a career in the field of psychology.

By the time I had 8 years clean, I was a doctor of psychology, had my first love of my life back and began to live as a productive member of society. I am there for my children today, my girl, my brothers’ and my mother. I give today and I am happier than I have ever been. I am about 100 times better as a guitar player and I don’t even gig. Thank you for allowing me to share a little bit of myself with you. By the way, forget about the clinical psychologist part and the music part when I say that anyone with a desire to stop is welcome to call me as another recovering person. This is my passion and it is what I do for a living.

I am going to end with a Mark Twain Quote. “Quitting smoking is easy, I’ve done it 100 times.”

In loving service,Lawrence
