Vicks Action 500 is the brand name of a combination medicine that contains: paracetamol 500 mg + phenylpropanolamine (PPA) 25 mg + caffeine 32 mg per tablet. Paracetamol is a pain-killer while PPA is a decongestant. Caffeine is added to counteract the sedative side effect of PPA.  Vicks Action 500 is not a very safe medicine because one of its ingredients (PPA) is banned in nearly all European and North American countries. PPA has been implicated in causation of stroke - a potentially dangerous and life-threatening side effect. Unfortunately the Indian drug control system due to a variety of non-scientific reasons has not banned the use of PPA in India. (Source: doctor.ndtv.com)

Drug No. 61

Rosiglitazone is an antidiabetic drug in the thiazolidinedione class of drugs. It works as an

insulinsensitizer, by binding to the PPAR receptors in fat cells and making the cells more

responsivetoinsulin.

Page 6: Banned madicines, sell in india

The main reason behind banning this drug was associated with a significantly increased risk

ofheartattack.

A meta-analysis of observational studies released in March, 2011 provides more evidence

that rosiglitazone is associated with a higher risk of heart failure, myocardial infarction (MI)

and death.

Nimesulide formulations for human use in children below 12 years

Some common side effects linked with Nimesulide use are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea,

pruritis, skin rashes, headaches and dizziness. Some serious side effects when used in

newborns are renal failure and hepatic failure.

According to International Society of Drug Bulletins (ISDB), this non-steroidal anti-

inflammatory drug (NSAID) offers no therapeutic advantage or better gastrointestinal safety

compared with other NSAIDs, whereas it exposes patients to a higher risk of fatal hepatic

disorders.

Nimesulide has been drawn aside from the pharmaceitical market because of its hepatic

effects (risk of hepatatoxicity) on patients.

clinical studies. Resulting from drug actions at CB1 receptors in the brain, reports of severe

depression and suicidal thoughts are frequent.

AND IT IS WITHDRWN FROM THE MARKET.

No. 66 / Sibutramine and its formulations for human

Hello,

Good evening

Sibutramine is a centrally-acting serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor structurally

related to amphetamines.

Sibutramine can substantially increase blood pressure and pulse in some patients. In 2010 the

FDA noted the concerns that sibutramine increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes in

patients with a history of cardiovascular disease.

Sibutramine has been associated with increased cardiovascular events and strokes and has

been withdrawn from the market in countries and regions including Australia, Canada, China,

the European Union, Hong Kong, India, Mexico, Thailand, the UK and the United States.
