Augmentin (Amoxicillin and Clavulanate Potassium Tablets) manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals Ltd (GSK India) is used to treat or prevent infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria. It is the first choice treatment for middle ear infections (otitis media). Augmentin can also be used for strep throat, pneumonia, sinusitis, skin infections, and urinary tract infections among others.

Active Ingredients

The active ingredients contained in Augmentin tablets are Amoxicillin (Amoxycillin) and Clavulanate Potassium.

Each film-coated tablet contains the following active ingredients: Amoxycillin Trihydrate IP equivalent to Amoxycillin 250 mg and Potassium Clavulanate IP (as Potassium Clavulanate Diluted IP) equivalent to Clavulanic Acid 125 mg for Augmentin 375 mg Amoxycillin Trihydrate IP equivalent to Amoxycillin 500 mg and Potassium Clavulanate IP (as Potassium Clavulanate Diluted IP) equivalent to Clavulanic Acid 125 mg for Augmentin 625 mg Amoxycillin Trihydrate IP equivalent to Amoxycillin 875 mgand Potassium Clavulanate IP (as Potassium Clavulanate Diluted IP) equivalent to Clavulanic Acid 125 mg for Augmentin 1000 mg

Uses of Augmentin Tablets

Augmentin is a combination penicillin-class antibacterial and beta-lactamase inhibitor indicated in the treatment of infections due to susceptible isolates of the designated bacteria in Lower Respiratory Tract Infections, Acute Bacterial Otitis Media, Sinusitis, Skin and Skin Structure Infections and Urinary Tract Infections.

Augmentin (Amoxicillin and Clavulanate Potassium Tablets) have to be stored at controlled room temperature i.e. from 20C to 25C (68F to 77F). Keep this as well as all other medicines away from children and pets.

Augmentin (Amoxicillin and Clavulanate Potassium Tablets) should be used only to treat or prevent infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria. Augmentin will not work against infections caused by viruses.

Augmentin Dosage

One Augmentin 500 mg Tablet twice daily for mild to moderate infections.

For lower respiratory tract infections, complicated urinary tract infections or severe infections at other sites, 1 to 2 Augmentin 500 mg Tablet three times daily.

Contraindications

Augmentin is contraindicated in patients with a hypersensitivity to Amoxycillin ,Potassium Clavulanate or any other component of this medication. Augmentin is also cointraindicated in patients with a history of allergic reactions to any beta-lactams, e.g. penicillins and cephalosporins as well as in patients which have a previous history of previous history of Augmentin associated jaundice/hepatic dysfunction.

Augmentin Side Effects

The most common Augmentin side effects are diarrhea/loose stools (9%), nausea (3%), skin rashes and urticaria (3%), vomiting (1%) and vaginitis (1%). Less than 3% of patients stopped treatment due to drug-related adverse reactions.

The overall incidence of side effects, and in particular diarrhea, increased with the higher recommended dose. Other less frequently reported adverse reactions (with an incidence rate of 1% or less) include: Abdominal discomfort, flatulence, and headache.

Augmentin Overdose

Serious and severe clinical symptoms are not likely to take place after overdosage with Augmentin Tablets. In case they occur, gastrointestinal symptoms and disturbance of the fluid and electrolyte balances may be evident. They may be treated symptomatically, with attention to the water/electrolyte balance. Amoxycillin may be removed from the circulation by haemodialysis.

Augmentin During Pregnancy

Augmentin (Amoxicillin and Clavulanate Potassium Tablets) has been classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy Category B. Animal studies have revealed no evidence of harm to the fetus due to Augmentin. There are, however, no adequate and well-controlled studies conducted in pregnant women. Since animal reproduction studies are not always predictive of human response, this medicine should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed.
