is a chronic disease characterized by recurrent attacks of breathlessness and wheezing. Severity and frequency of attacs vary from person to person. During an attack of asthma, the lining of the bronchial tubes swells, causing the airways to narrow. The flow of air into and out of the lungs is reduced.

The causes of asthma are not completely understood. Risk factors for developing asthma include inhaling asthma “triggers”, such as allergens, chemical irritants and tobacco smoke. Asthma cannot be cured, but appropriate management can control the disorder and enable people to enjoy a good quality of life.

Some causes and triggers are common to all people with asthma, and some are more individual. The fundamental causes of asthma are not completely understood. Inhaled asthma triggers are the strongest risk factors for developing asthma:

indoor allergens (for example house dust mites in bedding, pet dander and pollution);

outdoor allergens (such as pollens and moulds);

tobacco smoke; and

chemical irritants in the workplace

Other triggers can include cold air, physical exercise, and extreme emotional

arousal such as anger or fear. Asthma can even be triggered by certain

medications, such as non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs and aspirin, and

beta-blockers (which are used to treat heart conditions, high blood pressure

and migraine).

According to WHO estimates, 235 million people suffer from asthma globally.

The disease cannot be cured, but appropriate management can control the

disorder and enable people to enjoy good quality of life. Some children with

milder forms of asthma outgrow their symptoms with age.
