• Facial attractiveness is defined more by

the smile than by soft tissue relationships at rest

• For this reason, it is important to analyze the characteristics of the smile. and to think about how the dentition relates to the facial soft tissues dynamically as well as statically

• Two types of smiles:

The posed or social smile

Emotional smile

POSED SMILE

• Static

• Sustained

• Voluntary

• Squinting of eyes absent

EMOTIONAL SMILE

• Dynamic

• Not sustained

• Involuntary

• Squinting of eyes present

Stages of smile(based on Kernel Laplacian-lips)

• Stage I – lips closed

• Stage II – resting display

• Stage III – natural smile (three quarter)

• Stage IV – expanded smile (full)

SMILE ARC

• Relationship of the curvature of the incisal edges of maxillary incisors and canines to the curvature of lower lip.

• Ideal-maxillary incisal edge curvature parallel to curvature of lower lip

SMILE ARC

• Types

– Consonant

– Flat

– Reversed

LIP LINE

• Low-<75% of incisal display

• Average-100% incisor display with 1-2mm gingival display

• High->2mm of gingival display

Upper lip curvature

• Upward-most esthetic(monalisa smile)

• Straight

BUCCAL CORRIDORS

• Space between buccal surface of distal most teeth seen on smiling and angle of mouth.

• Measured from mesial line angle of maxillary first premolar to the inner portion of the angle of mouth

• Should not be excessive or absent

FRONTAL OCCLUSAL PLANE

• It is the line joining tip of canine from one side to another.

AMOUNT OF GINGIVAL DISPLAY

• Gummy smile is considered esthetic than smile with less incisor display.

LEVEL OF GINGIVAL MARGINS

• Gingival margins of maxillary CI and canine should be at the same level

• Gingival margin of LI should be slightly inferior to the margin height of CI and canine.

DENTAL COMPONENT

• Maxillary midline should coincide with facial midline.

• Teeth aligned in line of occlusion

• Teeth white in color is considered esthetic

GINGIVAL COMPONENT

• Maxillary laterals should exhibit half-oval or half-circular shape.

• Maxillary centrals and canines should exhibit shape that is more elliptical.

• The teeth should have good gingival scalloping.

SMILE SYMMETRY

• Bilaterally symmetrical
