Giovani Valdarno is a cooperative founded in 1978 and for more than thirty years it has been working in the field of public health, educational and training services in the provincial administrations of Arezzo and Florence.Giovani Valdarno was founded on the will of a group of women and even nowadays the number of female worlers is one of its characteristics (90% of the entire personnel).

The cooperative is the right instrument in order to achieve a common concept of solidarity during the daily activities.

After thirty years the cooperative Giovani Valdarno has grown without loosing the values that has characterised its nature: it puts the individual at the centre of its activities. In its services the goals of human promotion and social inclusion are mirrored.

For years the cooperative has been promoting a systematic planning in the social and educational/training field. It cooperates with non-profit subjects and with institutional bodies within regional and Community projects.

For the elderly, home and residential careThe public health services for the elderly are one of the main

activities of the cooperative.Our qualified and always updated personnel supports families in the treatments for lonely, bedridden persons suffering from

typical old age pathologies. It manages day care centres and residential care centres through the activation of modular

services. The interventions for the elderly are completed by networking projects for the free time, aimed at promoting a healthy life style and at emphasising the value of the elderly,

bearer of an important fund of experience.

For the younger, at school and after schoolWe deal with educational interventions based on the needs of

the minors. Except for our work at kindergartens and integrated services for early childhood, we have been

managing for years summer camps for children of the nursery and primary schools and we activate educational services at

home and in schools in favour of children, teenagers and young people with disabilities. This network of services,

without being too invasive, helps the children in their growth and offers the families the possibility to count on qualified

personnel.Our educators deal with both the planning and the effective

management of the intervention, they pay particular attention to the educational worthiness of every activity and are

engaged in the first place in the parents’ support.

For people with disabilitiesOur cooperative has been engaged for years in interventions

aimed at the development of life projects for people with disabilities through home care, educational interventions and

actions for vocational training and integration at work.

For those who want to enhance their trainingThe growth of our cooperative brought us to acquire the

status of professional training centre officially recognized by the Tuscany region (Type A,B,C). In our classrooms, provided

with all necessary technological instruments, we organise refresher courses and courses of professional qualification

addressed to those who want to enhance their competences or acquire new ones.

THE GOALS OF THE PROJECT:

The project ”ARGENTO VIVO E DINTORNI” specifically plans to:

Answer to the situations of social emergency, through the strengthening and the networking of home care support.

Reduce the social exclusion, by favouring meeting and socialization opportunities among the elderly who are in different hardship and loneliness situations and for this reason have bigger difficulties of

integration in the community.

Realize a social network and succeed in approaching the elderly population to the different social realities of the territory, through

neighbourly intervention of active solidarity.

ADDRESSEES OF THE PROJECT:

Over 65 elderly people resident in the Municipality of Montevarchi, in particular, partially non-self sufficient (frail) elderly.

THE PROCEDURE OF ALLOWANCE TO THE PROJECT:

In the project “argento vivo e dintorni” there is not any real and standard procedure of allowance, but during the organisation of this project, the cooperation with the municipal social services of Montevarchi becomes of central importance for the singling out of the subjects in the wide potential users group (elderly followed by home care projects, elderly part of the involved associations, etc) .

And the always effective method of the “word of mouth”.

The coordinator fills in an appropriate registration form for every entitled subject and keeps a record book of the monthly attendances.

All the activities of the project are free of charge.

The start of the recovery works on the ancient building of La Bartolea by the municipal administration has been carried out in April 2006, while it became the headquarter of the project

“ARGENTO VIVO E DINTORNI” in September 2007.

The multi-purpose community centre la Bartolea is a free space that the Municipality of Montevarchi puts at disposal of the

different voluntary associations (and not only!) of our territory.

It welcomes various public health initiatives but also cultural and artistic ones. It is the base of several meetings of associations

and entities but welcomes in its evocative and historical rooms art and sculptural exhibitions as well as set of projections, conferences and presentations of books of various nature.

This project is carried out twice a week (Wednesday and Friday) in the afternoon from 2.30 pm to 5.30 pm at the Multi-purpose Community Centre

La Bartolea (as stated above).

The activities proposed to the elderly are various:

* Light workouts and coordination exercises with balls and sticks,

* Parlour games like tombola, cards tournaments, mercante in fiera,

* sets of projection of old films,

* afternoon activities with music and dance,

* “special” projects on psycho-physical wellbeing and on healthy lifestyles,

* Also little dancing parties are offered in occasions of public holidays such as Carnival, Women’s Day or in occasion of school children

visiting our city.

THE MONITORING ON THE PROVIDED SERVICE:

Giovani Valdarno carries out controls of efficiency and effectiveness of the services on the basis of its quality management system with

certification UNI EN ISO 9001:2000

Moreover monthly meetings are carried out between the educator-coordinator of the Project and the social workers of the Municipal

district of Montevarchi for monitoring the attendance of the elderly who come to the centre and the possible new participants and for evaluating possible other types of solutions in case their physical

conditions have worsened and they are not able any more to attend the activities of the project.

The schedule of the activities is decided during the meeting with the educator-project coordinator, the technical coordinator of the cooperative and the manager of the municipal social services.

The Project “argento vivo e dintorni” begins in October and ends in June.
