more especially widows are advocated to join the band-wagon towards improving their earning power andspiritual nurturing in lieu of short term expeditiousventures that end up marooning one in financial limbo.Endophytic micro-organisms are and have proved capa-ble of incremental income generation once undertakenin an enterprenewal level or trial.[[The advantages of Azolla that makes it a high-potentialcrop:1. Azolla lives in symbiosis with a nitrogen-fixing bacte-ria, Anabaena Azollae, which fixes nitrogen from the air. This is beneficial in two ways.Because of this symbiosis, Azolla does not depend on ni-trogen fertilization, which makes it a cost-efficient crop.Less fertilizer use greatly reduces the environmental im-print of Azolla agriculture compared to other crops.2. Azolla is an aquatic fern. As such, it can be grown ina closed system. This has several advantages.A closed cropping system means no nutrients are leaked, and are therefore used efficiently. Azolla agriculture hasno competition to conventional arable crops because theclosed systems can be placed on marginal lands Closedsystems can be built in industrial regions where wastestreams from the industry can be used most efficiently3. Azolla is a fern, therefore its genetic optimal growthcondition is under limited light intensities. No extra arti-ficial light is needed for optimal growth4. Azolla is ubiquitous. It can be grown from high to lowlatitudes.5. Azolla produces a very special kind of biomass.Protein production yields from Azolla (10-20tons/acre/year) largely exceeds that of soy bean. Itproduces a high amount of long-chain functionalizedlipids, including the Azolla specific omega20-diolsAzolla makes a special mixture of polyphenols, caffeicacid and many platform chemicals for the chemicalindustryAzolla biomass conversion: cradle to cradleUpscalingNow is the time to explore cost, efficiency and optimalsetup for large-scale Azolla biomass production. The sub-sequent conversion of this biomass must be arranged sothat a cascade of products arise, from proteins via high-value lipids and polyphenol extraction to biochar.]]
