CLEAN ENERGY COUNCIL

Transform Australia’s energy system into a clean energy system

By leading and supporting the growth of the clean energy industry in Australia through:

• Shaping policy

• Developing standards and regulations and ensuring the integrity of

the industry

• Promoting the industry

• Providing a range of valuable services to our members, customers

and partners

RENEWABLE ENERGY IMPERATIVE

• Electricity is largest source of emissions

• Cost of renewable energy options is falling rapidly

• Current energy generation fleet is carbon intensive and old

• Fossil fuel price volatility

• Diversification of energy supply

• Empowered consumers

• Rural and regional employment

• Investment attraction

REVISED RET

- Legislated and revised RET provides certainty and restores bipartisanship

- Small-scale deployment of 14,000GWh by 2020. SRES phases down to 2030.

- LRET of 33,000GWh by 2020:- 6,000MW new capacity- 30-50 major projects- Hundreds of commercial-scale solar projects from businesses

looking to manage their own electricity production and consumption.

- 15,000 jobs and more than $40 billion worth of investment

BUSINESS DEMAND

• Major shift as large corporations seek to directly contract renewable energy supply

• More than 50 new solar power systems were installed in 2014 that were over 100 kW but less than 1 MW.

• Six of these commercial solar power systems were over 500 kW.

• Shorter lead times than large-scale solar power plants

UNLOCKING THE POTENTIAL

1. Improve Australia’s energy productivity through improved energy efficiency, conservation and demand management.

2. Ensure long-term and transparent carbon reduction targets that apply to the energy sector, recognising the critical interaction between energy policy and climate change policy. This must facilitate the closure of Australia’s most carbon-intensive and marginal coal fired generation.

3. Increase and extend the Renewable Energy Target in order to modernise Australia’s electricity generation sector with new and long-term investment in renewable energy beyond 2020.

4. Develop the next generation of clean energy technologies with appropriate institutions and support for R&D, demonstration, and innovative financing for the clean energy sector.

UNLOCKING THE POTENTIAL

5. Reform the energy market to facilitate greater competition, consumer empowerment and support for the transition toward clean energy sources of generation.

6. Address the barriers that act to distort price signals and drive up the cost to develop and deploy clean energy technology.

7. Build and cement public support requiring an ongoing focus on improving standards and the conduct of the sector and how it interacts with consumers and local communities.
