Planet2025 Network emerged from activities ofthe Eco-Insurance Initiative, a public privatepartnership project initiated in 2002 by

• TransGlobal Ventures, Inc. — an eco-financeand venture development company based in Washington DC, USA, in cooperation with the

• Institute for Environmental Security — a non-profit organization based in The Hague, the Netherlands.

Planet2025 Network initiatives are led by itsfounder, Steven Lovink, a social entrepreneurwith international operating background inventure development and eco-finance. Hispassion is to create synergies betweeninformation technologies, education, life sciences, and sustainable development.

21st Century RiskManagement

Planet2025 Network activities build uponthe main principles of Eco-Insurance for aSustainable Future (2003), a target-basedpolicy framework and financial mechanismfor managing 21st Century ecologicallyoriginated risks. Its objective is to managehumanity’s ecological footprint and strengthenenvironmental, economic, and human security.

The approach urges decision makers to agree on:

• a sustainable size of humanity’s global ecological footprint

• the time to reach this target

• the premium, fee or tax to compensate for overuse of the planet’s regenerative capacity

As a policy framework, it provides the essentialbuilding blocks for people, organizations, andnations to equitably shrink and share humanity’secological footprint over time. Implementationmay be mandatory or voluntary. The adoption ofmarket-based instruments has the potential toaccelerate the necessary transition to sustainability.

Life Insurance for the Globe

Eco-Insurance seeks to introduce an essentialfinancial safety valve into our global economicsystem. Our ecological debt now exceeds 2.7years of ecological production and continues toaccumulate. To the extent sustainable, ecologicalfootprint targets are not met, premium income

(fees or taxes) generated will offset mountingrisks by automatically capitalizing a globalcommunity investment program to maintain andrestore the globe’s life-supporting ecosystems —nature’s capital.

Planet2025 initiatives focus program and outreachactivities on creative voluntary approaches toimplementation. Even so, mandatory targets maywell become a necessity if humanity’s developmentpath maintains its unsustainable course.

A Prudent Investment

Substantial investments are required to make asuccessful transition to a sustainable future, butthe returns appear to be well worth it.

The Stern Review (2006), an analysis of TheEconomics of Climate Change, recommends onepercent of world GDP be invested per year toavoid worst consequences of climate change.Should we fail to do so, we might lose five totwenty percent of world GDP per year.

Few private or public investments offer such clearenvironmental and social benefits as well asimpressive financial returns.
