How long is it going to take?
Daily congestion: ‘just’ calculate
How long is it going to take?
Extreme situations: just take a guess
How long is it going to take?
Accidents: expert judgement
Accident Information
The accident
• Where,
• What happened, how many vehicles…
Capacity drop
• How many lanes are closed
Traffic management measures
• VMS’s show alternative routes
• Longer green times at Traffic lights
Remaining accident duration
• How long will it take until the lanes are cleared
Accident Information gathering
The accident
• Traffic info viewers,
• Road inspectors, camera’s, emergency services
Capacity drop
• Road inspectors, camera’s
Traffic management measures
• Traffic operator
• Traffic management systems
Remaining accident duration
• Road inspectors (and camera’s)
Traffic Information Chain
Problems
• Info from sources is not consistent
• A growing amount of noise (eg. Retweets, #A4)
• Too little camera’s and too few road inspectors to
monitor the whole road network
• It takes a long time to obtain the available Emergency
services information (other priorities)
• Human judgement needed for remaining accident
duration: more input means less focus
How to solve them
Improving input data:
• Focus on traffic related input: more Waze, less Twitter
• Better and faster info from road inspectors (ipad)
• Better and faster info from emergency services
(automation)
• eCall (but… no info about blown tires etc.)
• Info from service providers
• (More) Info from local traffic management centres
Traffic Information Chain
Currently works
Adding Decision Support:
• Test with traffic state prediction to determine impact
• How busy are (all) the roads
• How much capacity is ‘lost’
• How long until all lanes become available again?
• To determine when to advise road users to take another
route, or to stop taking them.
• Currently being configured (user interface), operational
begin 2016.
Thank you
