History:

India produces a total of 2 Million tons of apples every year and is the seventh largest apple producer in the world, but only 1 to 2% of the apples are stored in controlled atmosphere in India (a storage method which controls oxygen levels and allows it tokeep apples for several months without loosing on color and taste)

The cost of running cold storage and CA facilities in India is higher than in developed countries because of higher electricity cost and frequent power cuts (so investment for back up is a requirement)

Because India is losing up to 30% of its fruit and vegetable produce value every year due to lack of cold chain, the Indian government is giving subsidies for cold storage and CA investment (50% and in North East India up to 60%)

Components of CA Storage :

Insulated & Sealed Buildings: CA stores need to withstand 1” W.G.., that is twice as strong as normal CS;A properly designed CA door is an important factor in maintaining leak tight constructionRefrigeration: MUST be designed for low water loss; Sufcient cooling capacity to reduce temperature in 2-3 days;Good air circulation to provide even temperatures; Independent control of fan capacity;A ccura te tempera tu re control of produce; Safety controls to prevent freezing of productAtmosphere generation: a. Removal of Oxygen :Bank of modules for PSA nitrogen generator b. Removal of Carbon Dioxide : Carbon scrubber Measurement & Control: a. Primary Control : Ventilation to maintain O2 at required level…typically 2% control to +/- 0.2% b. Secondary Control : Operation of machinery to maintain CO2 at correct level…typically 3% control to +/- 0.5%.

Duel Analyzer for O2 and Co2

Nitrogen Generator Type : a. PSA((Pressure Swing Adsorption) : Used to produce N2 by passing compressed air, at several atmospheres, through a vessel containing adsorbent materials.b. VPSA (Vacuum):VPSA units regenerate the sieve material under vacuum conditions because it results in more fully regenerated molecular sieve material, which is more selective than material subjected to the classic PSA regeneration process. Units using this type of non-cryogenic oxygen production process may be referred to as VPSA (Vacuum Pressure Swing Adsorption), VSA (Vacuum Swing Adsorption) or PVSA (Pressure-Vacuum Swing Adsorption) systems.c. Membrane : Membrane nitrogen generators use tube bundles made of special polymers, often congured in a manner similar to a shell and tube heat exchanger. The air separation principle is that different gases have different permeation rates through the polymer lm.

Carbon dioxide Scrubber : As we know all that Fruit & Vegetables ‘breathes’ at higher rate when pluck from tree: it uses oxygen (O2) and produces carbon dioxide (Co2). A CO2 scrubber removes the carbon dioxide (also referred to as carbonic acid) that forms from your storage cells in order to prevent concentrations getting too high and causing damage to your fruit. Scrubbing is a closed circuit between the CA room and the scrubber. Depending on scrubber size, 4" to 8” pvc is typically used for the main suction and discharge lines and 3" to 6” pvc is used for transition in and out of the room. Room valves are usually electric, but can also be manual slide or buttery valves.

Air Tight Chambers : To make room air tight , the Panel need to sealed properly with special polymers and air tight doors used.

Fumigation:Fumigation generally involves the following phases: First the area intended to be fumigated is usually covered to create a sealed environment; next the fumigant is released into the space to be fumigated; then, the space is held for a set period while the fumigant gas percolates through the space and acts on and kills any infestation in the product, next the space is ventilated so that the poisonous gases are allowed to escape from the space, and render it safe for humans to enter. If successful, the fumigated area is now safe and pest free.
