2. Why have a plan?

Activity. In teams of 5. Two observers and 3 project implementers.

Undertake the "project" in two parts.

1) In 1 minute see how much of the "project" you can assemble.

2) Finish the project

Page 13: 2015 aip planning red

2. Why have a plan?

Activity.

What difference did seeing the picture make?

How is seeing the picture like having a plan?

4. Creating your Action Plan

• This workshop will focus on developing an Action Plan

Page 20: 2015 aip planning red

Step 1

Step 2

Step 3

Step 4

An Action plan sets a• goal with objectives• Identifies outputs and shows

1. What needs to be done to get there,2. Who is involved

Goal

4. Creating your Action Plan

Start

Page 21: 2015 aip planning red

Example

OUTPUT 3Roof

Output 3 ActivitiesBlah blah blah

OUTPUT 1House foundation

Output 1 ActivitiesBuy land,

Level block, Put in boxing

pour concrete, etc.

OUTPUT 2House walls

Output 2 Activities Blah blah blah

These outputs must all be achieved if the objective is to be achieved.

Planning - simple logical steps

Objective. A better house

Page 22: 2015 aip planning red

5. Creating an action planWhat’s the difference between a goal and an objective?

A goal is a broad statement - You contribute to a goal

Example: improve food security in the Punjab.

An objective is specific and measurable - You can achieve an objective

Example: 50% of farmers adopt the new variety by 2016.

Page 23: 2015 aip planning red

Planning

• True or False? • There is no single correct plan.

Page 24: 2015 aip planning red

Presentation structure

1. What is a plan?2. Why plan?3. Types of plans4. Creating your Action Plan

A. Set the scene

Page 25: 2015 aip planning red

4. Creating your Action Plan

• Part 1: Set the Scene - what we will do...A. Describe the project (1-2 sentences) B. Define project goalC. Define objectives and outputs D. Set (or estimate) an end dateE. (Later we define activities)

Page 26: 2015 aip planning red

Planning

A simple example

• You are asked to help primary school students better understand the principles of aerodynamics by providing them with the design for a "good" paper plane.

Page 27: 2015 aip planning red

4. Creating your Action Plan

Example - Paper plane. Part 1: Set the Scene

A. Describe the project (1-2 sentences)A. as given

B. Define project goalA. Improve school children understanding of aerodynamics.

C. Define objectives and outputs A. Review available plansB. Build and testC. Evaluate and provide best plans

D. Set (or estimate) an end dateA. Next week

Page 30: 2015 aip planning red

4. Creating your Action Plan

Set the sceneA) Describe the project - first individually and then discuss

with neighbor(s)1. Your topic of interest? Who's the audience?2. What is the problem or need you are addressing? What

do you want to change?3. How will you know you are successful? What will be

different?(Commodity projects can use the calendar exercise.)

Page 31: 2015 aip planning red

4. Creating your Action Plan

For commodities: Value Chain– Draw a Calendar of events– Identify where the problems and needs are– Identify the option(s) you recommend– What and who needs to be involved for the option

to be successful (consider, credit, inputs, knowledge access, marketing, transport, etc.)

Page 32: 2015 aip planning red
