Who are we?

The Michigan Club is a global social network and membership-based community striving to connect the world one Michigan-minded person at a time. The mission is to have a positive impact on the world by connecting forward-thinking, Michigan-minded people and inspiring social and economic change through business, education, personal development, and travel.

With that mission in mind, we knew it was important to put together The Michigan Club Unites For Flint fundraiser to help the resilient community of Flint during the city's water crisis.

The flint water crisis

The Flint water crisis is an ongoing drinking water contamination crisis in Flint, Michigan that started in April 2014. After Flint changed its water source from Lake Huron to the Flint River, Flint residents immediately complained of discoloration, smell, and a bad taste in their drinking water. Yet government officials continued to tell those people living in Flint that the water was safe to drink. But the drinking water did indeed have a series of problems, which culminated in lead contamination to thousands of residents creating a serious public health danger.

The corrosive Flint River water caused lead from aging pipes to leach into the water supply, causing extremely elevated levels of lead. In Flint, between 6,000 and 12,000 children have been exposed to drinking water with high levels of lead. While lead harms adults, the World Health Organization noted in a special report on childhood lead poisoning, the effects of lead on young brains are "untreatable and irreversible.” Lower IQ. Learning problems. Slowed growth. Inability to pay attention. These are a few of the long-term effects that lead poisoning can have on children according to the EPA and the CDC. Other effects include anemia and hyperactivity.

The water change is also a possible cause of an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease in the county that has killed 10 people and affected another 77 thus far. Clearly, the people of Flint, Michigan need our support and the need is tremendous.
