The Agri marketplace – industry background
2
• World population crossed the 7 billion threshold in 2013:
o The number of mouths that need feeding continues to rise while the agricultural surface available to produce food remains constant.
o Demand for meat is also increasing, the production of which requires more acreage than the equivalent amount of vegetarian food.
• R&D costs are escalating while the number of new active ingredients (AIs) launched and in development have been in decline.

Herbicide-resistant weeds are spreading. The success of the GM approach in the US and in the developing world has made the development of new herbicides unattractive for the major chemical companies - no fundamentally new principle of herbicide action has been discovered in the last 20 years.
Continuing worries about pollinator decline are forcing companies to rethink their approach to crop protection - the harm done to
‘good insects’ is a major criterion in assessing the environmental impact of any insecticide.
The development of fungicides have been the most trouble-free area for traditional chemical crop protection.
With no competition from GM crops and no hard-to-avoid side effects, agrochemical companies have enthusiastically embraced R&D in this field.

Many similarities between the Agri &
Pharma industries
5
Technology
• Similar discovery platforms: in silico, genomics, metabolomics, etc. • Both employ integrated Discovery & Optimization processes. • Similar analytical platforms: FT-NIR, NIR, LC-MS/MS, ligand binding, etc. • New strategies urgently required against MULTI-RESISTANT organisms.
R&D
• Escalating costs. • Productivity declines – new active ingredients with differentiated
MECHANISMS OF ACTION urgently required. • Formulation challenges. • Identifying and accessing the “right” technologies. • Lengthy development spans: 8-10 years.
Regulatory
• Regulatory BURDEN increasing – pesticides along with pharmaceuticals, belong to the most heavily tested chemicals that man has contact with.
• Cost of COMPLIANCE increasing. • Country-specific MARKET ACCESS challenges.
Commercial
• Market shifts – challenges in identifying segments with sustainable growth potential.
• Few unmet needs in developed sectors. • GENERICS eating into branded marketplaces.

A government sponsored venture capital client wanted to investigate the potential value and return of creating an agrochemical/plant biotech investment thesis for a US$500m venture capital fund.
The Parioforma team undertook a comprehensive review of the global environment for the agri-biotech and agrochemical industry in terms of markets, players, new technology trends, regulatory requirements and end consumer expectations. The team were able to leverage their expert understanding of the pharmaceutical/biotech venture capital business to identify novel market sectors and potential technology hot-spots for future investment in the agribusiness and technology environment. The Parioforma team also collated a database of VC investments and sales in agribiotech to determine the likely returns and risks of such a fund.
A large international agrochemicals company based in Eastern Europe needed help in developing an international expansion programme.
The Parioforma team undertook a detailed review of world markets using well known proprietary databases to identify market gaps in terms of countries, crops and agrochemical products/formulations.
Critical to the success of the research was to look at those countries which were under served by the big players due to geo-political risks or size of market.
