What is Itertextuality?Itertextuality is the shaping of texts meanings by other texts.It can refer to an authors borrowing and transformation of aprior text or to a readers referencing of one text in readinganother. Intertextuality is when you are able to makerecognize references between texts are therefore able tounderstand a deeper meaning of the idea being raised.Sometexts refer directly to each other such as in remakes offilms, extra-diegetic references to the media / society in theanimated cartoon The Simpsons, and many amusingcontemporary TV ads. Intertextuality can be found in anumber of forms. Intertextuality can be signified in the formof conversations, thoughts, architecture, sounds and physicalactivity.By referring to other texts and other media reminds usthat we are in a mediated reality. This runs counter to thedominant realist tradition which focuses on persuading theaudience to believe in the on-going reality of the narrative.
