What to do this Sunday in and

around Sheffield All too often our weekends fly by – you didn’t plan anything, and you just end up watching

countless episodes of Big Bang Theory, Friends and How I Met Your Mother. To make it all the

more depressing, you’ve already seen every. Single. One. Too much booze on Friday mixed

with Dominos on Saturday leaves you in a state of shock by Sunday, incapable of changing out

of your pyjamas.

However, we get the feeling that Spring has sprung, and that Summer is imminent! All too soon

you’ll be filled with creeping desolation for every second of British summer sun outside that

you miss!

So, what can you do in and around Sheffield to celebrate the Summertime? Well, we’ve

compiled a list of six activities, featuring a mixture of lazy and active options, all guaranteed to

make you proud of your weekend plans by the time Monday rolls around again.

Active:

1. Take a walk - Curbar and White Edge

Just outside Sheffield is the awe-inspiring beauty of the Peak District. This national park is huge, and we bet you’re not making the most of it. Head for Curbar Edge to blow away those cobwebs after a heavy night – the wind whistles straight over the sheer edge and across the heather-filled moor, where you might stumble across grouse, rabbits, deer and even, rarely, adders! Eat – Grouse Inn

After a plod along the tops, you’ll come back down to a road, and a pub. You’re halfway round, and it’s the perfect moment for a beer and a portion of

chips, or a few sarnies! Expect traditional English pub grub – nothing fancy, but just what you need at the midpoint of this walk. Head back along the other

edge to the carpark. There is the obligatory icecream to be had – theirs is usually a Frederick’s van parked in the carpark, happy to oblige!

2. Catch some culture at Chatsworth

There are plenty of walks around Chatsworth which allow you to take in the house from the outside, set in its stunning grounds – but if you’re looking for a

culture vulture weekend pursuit to impress your parents, spend the afternoon in the Chatsworth Gardens, looking at the sculpture exhibition. On all the

way until October, the exhibit always boasts astounding sculptures, with previous exhibitors including Damien Hirst and Anthony Gormley.

Eat – in the grounds

If it’s a sunny day, take the opportunity to paddle in the river running alongside the house, and take a picnic and a plaid rug – could there be a more idyllic

way to spend your Sunday? P.S, if you forgot your packed lunch, pop into the Chatsworth Farm Shop too for some of their tasty, local, free-range fare –

think little pork pies, quiches and cakes! Yum! If our weather has let you down, head for the nearby village of Baslow for a 2-rosette winning gastropub

3. Active – walk in Edale

For a more serious venture, head out to Edale and tackle a portion of the Pennine Way. Stretching from Sheffield to Scotland, the Pennine Way traces the

Pennines up the backbone of Britain, and is hilly! Head up Kinder from Edale, but be prepared – the scenery up there is almost lunar. Do not tackle this

without a map, or on a misty day, because you do not want to get lost up there.

Eat – back in Edale

Edale offers a selection of great British pubs, offering traditional pub lunches. The Old Nag’s Head has great guest ales on, and a roaring fire in Winter – to

4. Lazy – learn about Sheffield

Sheffield is a city with a great history. The Millennium Galleries are a great place to start, to learn about Sheffield’s history as the most prolific metal worker

Then head over to Weston Park museum to look at

their collections – great fun. The current exhibit is on until the 20th September, and looks into the Ice Age. See long-extinct woolly rhinos and mammoths,

tools and weapons. Creswell Crags is only twenty miles south east of Sheffield, and this was once Europe’s northern frontier of settlement – past here was

Lunch – Silversmith’s

No, it’s got nothing to do with Steel industry now, excepting its location. What Silversmith’s can offer, however, is some gastronomic delights fit for a king,

celebrating local specialities and the best seasonal produce the UK has to offer. It’s not cheap, but it IS great. With a list of awards, it seems that everyone

5. Feeling mega-active? Outdoor swimming and watersports at Rother Valley Country Park

Open from 8.30am every day except Christmas Day, Rother Valley is a great day out. Opened in May 1978, the park joined several councils to offer some

open, green space for city dwellers. Watersports have always been integral to the park, and if you simply can’t see the sun without a gallon of adrenaline

coursing through your veins, this is the way you want to spend your Sunday. You can find equipment for sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, rowing, pedal boats

Eat – in the park

After all that energy is expended you’ll want to replenish! Bring your own BBQ on a truly sunny day, for a great lazy afternoon in the park. Otherwise you

6. Lazy – some you time with the Brahma Kumaris
