Fr Jim Crowe, a priest from the Kiltegan missionary, came to speak to 5th and 6th year stu-dents at St. Joseph's College, Borrisoleigh. Jim has been in Sao Paulo Brazil since1969 and is a well known human rights activist in the favelas of Jardim Angela.. He isoriginally from Clonlara, Co.Clare to where he returns every summer for a short break. Hespoke about how he lived through a dictatorship of the eighties, how heexperienced a time of lawlessness and regular homicide. He was central to the formationof a community police system in the 1990s which helped reduce the death rates. The edu-cation system of Brazil was compared to Irelands’ and everybody was glad they don’t haveto rely on four hours at night in much overcrowded classes! Fr. Jim emphasised how ordi-nary people can have extraordinary effects if they work together towards a common goal.

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) hasexpressed concern at driver attitudesto tyre safety, as a survey conductedby the Authority has revealed that 1 in8 drivers (14%) have bought part-worn tyres in the past. The survey of1,000 motorists, conducted in Novem-ber 2014, also showed that motoristsare not checking their tyres regularly, despite knowing how to do it.
8 out of 10 (79%) drivers stated thatthey know how to check the air pres-sure of their tyres, yet 1 in 10 checkthis less than once a year or not at all.Similarly, 1 in 8 drivers check thecondition and tread depth of theirtyres less than once a year or not atall, despite 72% of drivers knowinghow to perform this important check.
Tyre safety, child safety and cyclingsafety were the focus of this year’s‘Irish Road Safety Week’.Speaking at the launch of ‘Irish RoadSafety Week’, Minister for Transport,Tourism and Sport Paschal DonohoeTD said:
“’Irish Road Safety Week’ is an im-portant event in the road safety calen-dar as it gives us an opportunity toreview our behaviour on the roads. Ifwe all looked at how we use the roadsevery day, I have no doubt that wewould find room for improvement. Sothis week, consider what small changeyou could make to make the roadssafer for yourself and others. In par-ticular, as the weather starts to get thatbit colder, I would urge road-users toensure they check their tyres regular-ly. Tyres are the only thing betweenyou and the road, so it is critical thatthey are in good condition and that thetread depth and air pressure arechecked regularly.”
The RSA is reminding road-users thatroadworthy tyres must be the righttype and size for the vehicle, be prop-erly inflated, free from defects andhave a tread depth of at least 1.6mm.
Chief Superintendent Mark CurranAn Garda Síochána said:
“Tyres are the only part of your vehi-cle that separate you from the road soit is critical that they are in road-worthy condition at all times. Wewould encourage everyone to avail ofthe free tyre check and ensure they areup to standard, particularly as winterapproaches.”
Ms Moyagh Murdock, Chief Execu-tive of the Road Safety Authoritysaid:
“We are concerned with the level ofpart worn tyres being used on vehi-cles, some are on sale for as little as10 euro. When you consider that tyresare your only contact with the road, you really have to ask yourself is thisthe value you place on your family’slife?”
“The RSA are currently finalising areport, based on an analysis of foren-sic data that shows the quality of tyresplays a much bigger role in fatal colli-sions than previously thought. So it isreally worrying that people are notprioritising safety when they purchasetyres. Your safety, along with thesafety of your passengers and otherroad users, could depend directly onthe condition of your vehicle’s tyres. If you drive with tyres in poor condi-tion, you really are putting your life atrisk. You may save a few euro in theshort-term, but at what price? Getthem checked and give yourself andyour passengers the peace of mindthat you’re travelling safely.” Moyaghadded.
Mr Paddy Murphy, Acting Presidentof the ITIA said:
“It is important to keep our car and itstyres in top condition, yet many of usdon’t make it a priority. As winterapproaches and the weather starts toget worse, it really is critical that yourtyres are in the best condition possi-ble. If you are unsure what to do orhow to check them a simple 5-minutevisit to a local ITIA tyre outlet is all ittakes to get your tyres checked forfree to ensure they are safe. To findyour local ITIA member visitwww.itia.ie
It’s important to remember safe tyres– saves lives.
Ms Moyagh Murdock, Chief Execu-tive of the Road Safety Authority en-couraged people to play their part inkeeping our roads safe from death andinjury
“To date this year, 119people havedied on our roads, 20 fewer than thesame period last year. We can all playa role in keeping our roads safe bychanging our behaviour for the better.Small changes can make a huge dif-ference, for example, reducing yourspeed, making sure you and your pas-sengers are safely restrained in thecar, or keeping your vehicle, motorcy-cle or bicycle in roadworthy conditionat all times. So this week, think aboutwhat you can do to be a better, saferdriver and play your part in reducingdeaths and serious injuries on ourroads.”
RSA Expresses Concern OverDriver Attitudes to Tyre Safety
Irish motorists could be wasting over€18 million a year on fuel andputting lives at risk by driving ondangerously underinflated tyres, iffigures drawn from a UK-wide studyconducted by Michelin were appliedhere.
After inspecting tens of thousands ofcars over an eight-year period, thefree Fill-Up-With-Air tyre check pro-gramme - extended to include eventsheld in Galway, Naas, Dungarvanand Ballymena (where the companymanufactures truck and bus tyres forthe European and US markets) -Michelin found that 62% of cars
checked had underinflated tyres ofwhich 37% were ‘dangerously under-inflated’ or ‘very dangerously’ un-derinflated. Some 5% had apunctured tyre and one per cent hadtread depths below the legal mini-mum.
Running on tyres underinflated by aslittle as 7psi can increase fuel con-sumption by about 1 litre every833kms. At an average petrol/dieselfuel price of €1.37 per litre, thismeans that almost one third of allcars in Ireland could be consumingan additional €18 million a year onfuel needlessly, Michelin estimates.

Four small patches of rubber eachabout the size of your hand are the on-ly parts of the car in touch with theroad.
The right tyres, in good condition andcorrectly inflated are vital for brakingand cornering safety – and the onlythings keeping the car on the road.
Regular checks and maintenance willhelp to prolong the life of the tyres andkeep you on the right side of the lawtoo.
Tyre life is influenced by several fac-tors:
Driving style. For example, aggres-sive cornering and harsh braking in-creases wear
Position. Front tyres wear faster be-cause of movement through steering
Speed. High speed driving increasestemperature and increases wear
Load. Heavy loading increases wear
Pressure. Both under inflation andover inflation increase wear
Alignment. Incorrect wheel alignmentresults in rapid and uneven wear.
Original fit car tyres
For new cars the car maker and tyremanufacturers work closely to select amake, size and tread pattern that suitsthe car. Styling, handling, noise andmany other factors are taken into ac-count.
When replacing your tyres you muststick to the same size, type and ideallybrand and tread pattern too. This islikely to be the tyre best suited to thecar. Changing brand or pattern couldresult in increased noise or adverselyaffect cornering characteristics for ex-ample.
New tyres to the front or rear?
Check the car manual first as somevehicle manufacturers give specificadvice on this. If there is no informa-tion in the manual, then it's good prac-tice for safety to fit the best/newesttyres on the rear. In wet conditions, this favours understeer rather thanoversteer. So if you have the fronttyres renewed it's best to have the rearones moved to the front and the newtyres fitted to the rear.
Basic legal requirements
Tyres must be compatible with otherson the car and generally be in goodphysical condition
Tyres must be correctly inflated to thevehicle manufacturer's recommendedpressure
Tread depth must be above the legalminimum which for passenger cars is1.6mm throughout a continuous bandin the centre 3/4 of the tread andaround the entire circumference
You don't have to carry a spare and itdoesn't have to meet the legal require-ments while it's stowed away.

Fogged up windows? Condensation onthe glass? Rubbers to small ? Hingesand handles not closing correctly ?These are all signs that you are Heatingthe street! as they say. When you turnyour heating on it rises to the ceilingand a good insulated Attic which mostpeople have will keep it down . Thenext ports of exit are the glass, the win-dows and the walls.
New windows would be the order ofthe day if the pockets are deep enoughand enthusiasm for the redecorationafterwards. What you might not knowis an upgrade of your existing windowsis possible a lot cheaper and with littledisturbance to your home. Early dou-ble-glazing was as simple as 2 panes ofordinary glass joined together. It was asmall step up from single glazing butwith modern advances in both glassmanufacturing technology and with re-search into energy management, ex-perts learnt that poor performingglazing is a major weak link in Build-ing Energy Rating (BER).
The standard of glass has improved somuch in the last ten years that A-Ratedgas filled double glazing can retain70% more heat then normal doubleglazing. The difference between singleglazing and A-Rated double glazing ishuge. The savings enourmous!!
Teak ,Aluminium and PVC windowscan all be upgraded to improve yourhome and make it more snug for thewinter. The service on the windowsincludes replacing all the glass repair-ing all the rubber and checking and re-pairing any hinges and loose handlesthat may leave draughts. As the work is90% external there is very little distur-bance to your home. You could alsochange the appearance of your houseby including georgian bar effect or ifyour old double glazing has georgianyou could remove it and give yourhouse a fresher look whilst upgradingto A_Rated glass.
On our doorstep we have Carey Glassltd which produce an A-rated unit thathas a U-Value of 1.0 which in doubleglazing is the best.Triple glazing canreach as low as 0.7 but most older win-dows would not take the weight orthickness of glass.
So if you have old teak single glazedwindows or aluminium windows withshrunken rubber or if you just feel yourrooms are not staying warm contact theglazier and talk over the improvementshe could make and the windows youhave. We at Mirror and Glassworxwould be delighted to take your calland advise you the best we can..

Moonfish Theatre Company in co-production withAn Taibhdhearc and in association with Stroller’sTouring Network presentSTAR OF THE SEAadapted from the novel by Joseph O’Connor
The Source Arts Centre, ThurlesCo TipperarySaturday 17 October | 8.00pm | €15Box Office – Tel: 0504 90204 /www.thesourceartscentre.ie
Award-winning Moonfish Theatre Company, areproud to announce the national tour of Star of theSea after their global premiere and sold out run atthe Galway International Arts Festival 2014. A co-production with An Taibhdhearc, the play opens atthe company’s hometown Galway, and at An Taibh-dhearc on September 16 for four dates and tours to 9other venues nationwide until October 24.
Star of the Sea, originally the international bestselling novel by Joseph O’Connor, is set against thebackdrop of the Irish famine. It was Moonfish Thea-tre Company with Galway’s An Taibhdhearc thatfirst brought to life this theatrical reimagining ofO’Connor’s historical writing. With the original castthe company are delighted to share this great pieceof Irish theatre to wider audiences, this Autumn.
Star of the Sea is a sweeping story, set during theFamine, that moves between the wild landscape ofConnemara, Co. Galway and the claustrophobicconfines of a famine ship - the Star of the Sea. It isthis ship that sets sail for the promised land andmakes the journey from Ireland to New York, in1847. Among the passengers are maidservant MaryDuane, the ruined Lord Meredith, and Pius Mulvey,a ruthless murderer. Their lives and fates are moreconnected than any of them know, creating a grip-ping story of revenge and forgiveness in this newpiece of Irish theatre.
Moonfish Theatre’s production asks anumber of timeless questions which notonly straddle Irish history but are verypertinent to many other countries in-cluding the Ireland of today: what hap-pens when a society is put underimmense pressure? What are the ethicalchoices that face individuals at thesemoments in time? And what has beenthe Famine’s lasting effect on Irish cul-ture, in particular, the Irish languageand music?
Star of the Sea is a bilingual play thatwill be performed in Moonfish Thea-tre’s signature blend of Irish and Eng-lish and will be accessible to audienceswith little or no Irish. The show hasbeen created for an adult audience, andis suitable for anyone over 16 years. This is a not-to-be-missed play, whichtours nationwide this September andOctober.
What author of Star of the Sea, JosephO’Connor said about the show:
"...I found their version and their adap-tation of it so moving and very emotional...and tohear those words spoken in the Irish language...wasreally something that I'll never forget."

Anxiety (continued from previous issue)
You can see by this stage of howdestructive social anxiety is. It is sodisabling because sufferers feelhelpless under the onslaught of itssymptoms, which are psychologicaland physical. The psychologicalsymptoms of social phobia are fear, anxiety and worry. These unpleasantfeelings may come on months beforethe event, and you worry aboutmaking a fool of yourself in public, making a mess of a speech, beingseen by others as being nervous, being judged and ridiculed, andbeing self-conscious. It is as if youare the centre of attraction for thewrong reasons. You know that this isridiculous and irrational, but this doesnot ease the worry and the fear.
This intense fear, worry and anxietywill affect your body and bring onunpleasant physical reactions. Yourmouth may feel parched, sweatbreaks out on your forehead, yourvoice becomes shaky, your handsfeel clammy, your face twitches, andyou may feel faint. Some of thereactions are similar to those of panicattacks. A common reaction ispalpitations, which in themselves cancause a lot of stress and fear. Thosewho suffer from this complaint maytremble and sweat, even at thethought of going to a celebration. They immediately become tense, blush, and often feel dizzy. They mayexperience an overwhelming senseof despair and hopelessness; feel aknot in their stomach, and a strongdesire to escape from the socialevent.
One of the principal symptoms ofsocial phobia affects your breathing. As the stress and anxiety increases, you will begin to breathe rapidly, andthis in turn triggers other distressingphysical symptoms such asdizziness, a choking feeling, increased pulse, and tension. Thesecan be relieved by deep breathing.Meditation and relaxation techniquesalso provide some relief. On a longerterm examine your thoughts and tryto change them. Negative thoughtspredicting disaster or embarrassmentcreate a negative outlook and anirrational inner world, whichnourishes the anxiety. Changingthese thoughts to more positive onesstarves the anxiety and destroys theinner irrational, unreal world that youhave created. For example you could
change the following negativethoughts, ‘I know I’m going to make aright idiot (eejit!) of myself’, ‘I can’t dothis’, ‘ this is too much for me’, ‘Iknow I’m going to get a panic attack’,‘people will think I am a bore’, peoplewill think I’m stupid’, ‘I know I’m goingto sweat, and what will people say’, ‘Iknow my mouth will dry up and I willspeak with a squeak’, and so on. Youmight substitute the following positivethoughts for these negative thoughts- ‘I know what I’m talking about, Ihave researched what I am going tosay’, ‘I might sweat. So what!’, ‘it isnormal to be nervous when speakingin public’, ‘I will have a glass of waternearby if my mouth gets dry. It’snormal to have a dry mouth whenspeaking publicly’, ‘I won’t get apanic attack. I know how to breathedeeply to ensure my breathing is ok’,‘People won’t think that I’m boring. Ifsome do, so what!’, ‘I am not thatimportant that people will focus onme’. Try to put in a thought that isexactly the opposite of the negativethought. You could practise this on adaily basis until it becomes secondnature to you.
It is important to understand thatpositive thinking and behaviourcan undo the negative pathwayshardwired on our brain andreplace them with positive ones. This is well researched andproved. I have found it successfulin my own regard. It takes about ayear or so for this to work.
