Bachelor WisdomBachelor cooking is a matter of atti-tude. If you think of it as setting fireto things and making a mess, it's fun. However, it's not so great if you thinkof it as dinner...Nomenclature is an important part ofbachelor cooking. If you call it"Italian cheese toast," it's not disgust-ing to have warmed-over pizza forbreakfast.
A Doctor was speaking with the manwhose wife was about to receive aCAT scan of the chest. While thenurse was placing the intravenousline, he asked the husband if his wife
had undergone any other tests. Theman named several procedures in-volving various body parts, but hecouldn't remember one particular test.Thinking out loud, he said, "What isthat thing women have that mendon't?"His wife was quick to answer, "Abrain, dear."
Grandpa was always going on aboutthe good old days, and the lower costof living, in particular..."When I was a kid, my mom couldsend me to the store, and I'd get a sa-lami, two pints of milk, 6 oranges, 2
loaves o' bread, and a magazine, somenew blue jeans... all for a dollar!!Then Grandpa said sadly ..."You can'tDO that any more...they got thosedarn video cameras everywhere youlook......"
A woman was at home with her chil-dren when the telephone rang. In go-ing to answer it, she tripped on a rug, grabbed for something to hold on toand seized the telephone table. It fellover with a crash, jarring the receiveroff the hook.As it fell, it hit the family dog, whichleaped up, howling and barking. Thewoman's three-year-old son, startled
by this noise, broke into loud screams. The woman mumbled some colourfulwords. She finally managed to pick upthe receiver and lift it to her ear, justin time to hear her husband's voice onthe other end say, "Nobody's said hel-lo yet, but I'm positive I have the rightnumber."
"Take a pencil and paper," the teachersaid, "and write an essay with the title'If I Were a Millionaire.'"Everyone but Philip, who leaned backwith arms folded, began to write furi-ously."What's the matter," the teacherasked. "Why don't you begin?"
"I'm waiting for my secretary," hereplied.
It was our pals birthday, so we de-cided to call him up and sing "HappyBirthday."Only trouble was we dialed thewrong number."Don't let it bother you." said thevoice on the other end, just before hehung up, "You need all the practiceyou can get."
A woman was getting swamped withcalls from strangers. The reason? Abilling service had launched an 800number that was identical to hers. When she called to complain, shewas told to get a new number."I've had mine for twenty years," shepleaded. "Couldn't you changeyours?"The company refused, so she said,"Fine. From now on, I'm going totell everyone who calls that their billis paid in full."The company got a new number thenext day.
All I ask is a chance to prove that money can't make me happy.

What A Boy Wants For ChristmasA father was out shopping in a toydepartment one Christmas Eve.Dad said, 'What a marvellous trainset. I'll buy it.'The girl behind the counter lookedpleased and murmured, 'Great, I'msure your son will really love it.'Dad replied with a glint in his eye,'Maybe you're right. In that case I'lltake two.'What a Girl Wants For ChristmasThe Santa Claus at the shopping mallwas very surprised when a Emily, young lady aged about 20 years old
walked up and sat on his lap. Now,we all know that Santa doesn't usual-ly take requests from adults, but shesmiled very nicely at him, so heasked her, 'What do you want forChristmas?''Something for my mother, please,'replied Emily sweetly.'Something for your mother? Well, that's very loving and thoughtful ofyou,' smiled Santa. 'What do wouldyou like me to bring her?'Without turning a hair Emily an-swered quickly, 'A son-in-law.'

Merry Christmas toall our customers
Not long ago and far away, Santawas getting ready for his annual trip, but there were problems everywhere.Four of his elves got sick and thetrainee elves did not produce the toysas fast as the sick elves. Santa wasbeginning to feel the pressure of be-ing behind schedule.
Then Mrs. Clause told Santa that hermum was going to come and visit. This stressed Santa even more.
When he went to harness the rein-deer, he found that that three of themwere about to give birth and two hadjumped the fence and were out, heav-en knows where. More Stress.
Then he began to load his sleigh, when one of the boards cracked andthe toy bag fell to the floor and scat-tered the toys.
Totally frustrated, Santa went intothe house for a cup of tea and a shotof sherry. When he went to the cup-board, he found the elves had drankall his liquor and there was nothing todrink.
In his frustration, he dropped his teapot and it shattered into a millionpieces and all over the kitchen floor. He got his broom to sweep all thebits up only to find that the mice hadeaten the straw off the end of thebroom.
Just then the door bell rang and Santacussed on his way to the door. Heopened the door to see a little angelwith a great big Christmas tree. Theangel said: "Where would you like toput this tree fat man?"
And that my friends, is how the littleangel came to be on top of the Christ-mas tree.
It Happened One Christmas
Christmas is forever, not for just one day,for loving, sharing, giving, are not to put away
like bells and lights and tinsel, in some box upon a shelf. The good you do for others is good you do yourself.

Twas the night before Christmas and all through the houseNot a creature was stirring, not even the mouse!
The silence was not because all were in bedThey were sitting reading the Tipp Tatler instead.Six Tatler's they had and each had their ownAnd each prayed that Santa, had at least one.
Dad was stretched in his comfy armchairReading Tipp Tatler with ne'ry a care"Some power tools, new TV, a garmin, no less,And some whiskey and beer from that great off licence".
Mom was admiring the bargains galore,At butchers, well listed, with roosters and all."Maybe a hairdo, a facial, a tan,And a new pair of shoes, now that's a good plan".
Grandpa and Granny, a Tatler did shareAnd both felt their hearing, could do with some care,And a nice fill of oil would keep them all warm,So the house would be cosy the following Christmas morn.
In a letter to Santa, Johnny had said"It's in the Tipp Tatler, a Nintendo, I beg",While Katie was happy that Santa would heedThose horse riding lessons, she badly did need.
But what of the last mag, now where could it be?Oh, there they can see it lying under the tree,But who would have left it lying there on the floor,That wonderful mag with great adverts galore?
Fido and Felix and Nibbles the Mouse,Were amazed at the offers, right here in their house.A holiday in Heaven, great toys for to playAnd some wonderful treats, to have every day.
And so the Tipp Tatler can brighten your dayMake Santa's life easy up there in the sleigh.Tho' Christmas is one day, please don't shed a tear,Tipp Tatler's the best bet, throughout the whole year!

The tradition of the Christmas stockingsbegan by a story told since ancient timeabout a kind noble man who had threedaughters. The wife of the noblemanexpired and the daughters and their fa-ther were left in a state of sorrow. Thedaughters had to do all the work in thehouse. When the daughters becameyoung and eligible for marriage, thepoor father could not afford to give thehuge dowries to their husbands.
One evening the daughters, after wash-ing their stockings hung them near thefire place to be dried. Santa Claus beingmoved by the plight of the daughterscame in and put in three bags of goldone in each of the stocking hanging bythe chimney. The next morning the fam-ily noticed the gold bags and the noble-man had enough for his daughter’smarriage. The daughters got married andthey lived happily ever after. Since thenchildren have been hanging Christmasstockings.

According to the Alaska Depart-ment of Fish and Game, while bothmale and female reindeer grow ant-lers in the summer each year, malereindeer drop their antlers at the be-ginning of winter, usually late No-vember to mid-December.Female reindeer retain their antlerstill after they give birth in thespring. Therefore, according to eve-
ry historical rendition depictingSanta's reindeer, every single one ofthem, from Rudolph to Blitzen, hadto be a girl.We should have known... ONLYwomen would be able to drag a fatman in a red velvet suit all aroundthe world in one night and not getlost.

Many years ago. people believed thatwhen the leaves fell from the trees, the spirits that lived in the treeswould leave the trees. So theydecorated the bare trees withcoloured cloth to make thetrees look cheerful and encour-age the tree spirits to return. As the trees would regrow theirleaves every spring, the people
thought that it was their efforts thatdid it. This was the start of decorat-ing trees, and when in Germany, they
first started bringing treesinto the house, these toowere decorated. It wasPrince Albert, Queen Victo-ria's husband who introducedthe Christmas Tree to Eng-land in 1841.

Skips provided for factories, etc.
The scheme will run until 30th June2011. Motorists will receive a €1,250government discount off the price oftheir new car under the scheme.
Alan Nolan, SIMI’s Director Generalsays, “the continuation of the Govern-ment Scrappage Scheme for the peakbuying season for next year will guar-antee increased Government revenuesand safeguard the increased level ofemployment in the sector. As a directresult of Scrappage we have seen anadditional 3,200 jobs created this yearand the Industry is also engaged in anational program aimed at recruiting anextra 150 new apprentices over thecoming weeks.”
Nolan continues, “The impact of theGovernment Scrappage scheme thisyear exceeded our expectations. Wepredicted that in total, 70,000 new carswould be sold this year. Today, the fig-ure stands at 88,095 and we expect tofinish up the year around the 88,500
mark. But it is not just about new cars.Scrappage also stimulates activity inused car sales and also positively im-pacts on servicing and repairs.”To date (end of November) 16,468Scrappage Scheme cars have been sold, representing a government tax take of€57.6 million. If 10,000 ScrappageScheme cars are sold next year, thiswill net the Government between €35and €40 million.
President of SIMI and MD & Chair-man of Ford, Eddie Murphy says, “Anincrease in consumer confidence andspending will no doubt transfer to othersectors of the economy. Scrappagescheme cars only represent around onefifth of total new car sales, whichshows that the main benefit of thescheme has been the knock on effect tothe overall sector. Manufacturers anddealers have added further discount tothe Government’s this year and thatwill no doubt continue into next year.
SIMI welcomes continuation ofScrappage and says schemecould net close to €40million next year
Motoring
The key to safe driving are gentle ma-neuvers. Drive slowly and don’t tail-gate, double your braking distance andallow plenty of space between you andother road users. It can take up to 10times longer to stop in icy conditionsthan in the dry. Be mindful of pedestri-ans crossing the road and of cyclists.Stick to the main roads which are morelikely to have been treated. Additionalcare is required on secondary roads, ru-ral routes, hills and in housing estates.
Select 2nd gear when pulling away, eas-ing your foot off the clutch gently toavoid wheel-spin. Use the highest gearpossible when driving on the flat andengage a lower gear when travellingdownhill, particularly when drivingthrough bends. When climbing a hill itis important to avoid having to stop onthe hill by waiting until it is clear of oth-er cars or by leaving plenty of room be-tween you and the car in front. Maintaina constant speed, choosing the mostsuitable gear well in advance to avoidhaving to change down on the hill. Driv-ing downhill, reduce your speed beforethe hill, use a low gear and try to avoidusing the brakes. Anticipate when you
may need to stop and use engine brak-ing – changing down through the gears– to slow the car gradually before apply-ing the brake pedal gently. Leave asmuch room as possible between you andthe car in front. Release them and de-clutch if the car skids. Be aware of therisk of black ice, it is difficult to see andis nearly transparent ice that often lookslike a harmless puddle or is overlooked
entirely. Watch out for black ice, espe-cially in sheltered / shaded areas onroads, under trees and adjacent to highwalls. A very noticeable decrease inroad noise is an indication that you aredriving on black ice. When moving offfrom a standstill, use second gear tominimise wheel spin. If your car startsto slip in place while you are trying totake off, ease off the accelerator.

Ireland is a land of opportunity. Ifyou have an idea and work it smartlyyou can become a success, providedyou ignore all those who told you itcouldn’t be done.
I know someone called Jack, whohad no formal education or privi-leged supportive upbringing, but hehad a bit of a vision and commonsense. He knew that if he could cookbetter potato chips that the competi-tion down the road, his businesswould be supported.
Jack understood that every street andtown has “hot spots”. These are areaswhere people congregate and passnaturally. In modern speak; the mar-keting gurus call it footfall. (Thisstrange language is used by the pro-fessionals to make the issue look bigand too complicated for you to un-derstand. This facilitates them incharging larger fees) Jack picked twopotential spots and used his nativecunning to negotiate the best dealfrom the landlord. He started his fishand chip business and built his“edge” on the quality of his chips. His business grew over the next fewyears with the opening of severalsimilar type shops.
The business was so good that Jackwas able to afford to send his son Patto good schools and university. Ev-eryone in the family was very proudof this, even though the neighbourswere really jealous, but presentedthemselves differently to Jacks face.
Jack was anxious that Pat would jointhe business and with his businessdegree drive the business on to thenext stage. Pat told Jack that it wasn'tthe time to expand the business andthat there was a recession coming. He suggested that Jack needed tochange his business model and startbuying less expensive potatoes andoil, which were of poorer quality. Inaddition he could spare in energycosts if he cooked the potato chips by36 second less. Pat did out spread-sheets to prove to Jack that this newtactic would help the cash-flow andmargins in the business.
Instinctively Jack knew that thesewere wrong tactics but who was heto know, since it was Pat who hadthe college education. He decided tobe guided by Pat.
After he made the changes the busi-ness started to drop, very slowly at
first but then at a pace. Initially Patslogic seemed to be reflected in thefigures, but over a longer time frame,Jack was correct. Initially the moremarginal shops closed and then therot spread as more and more of theirshops lost their “edge” and had toclose.
One day after Jack had to close hissecond last shop he came home verysad. Pat asked him what was wrong?
“You were right son, the recession isbad. It is having a desperate negativeimpact on our business.
Jack had eventually become a victimof negative thinking.
Are you a victim of it too?
We become what we think about orallow ourselves to be influenced by.
Negative thinking and self talk leadsto negative self realisation. Positivethinking and self talk can lead to theopposite.
Many of the successful companiesout there were started during difficulteconomic times. These entrepreneursdidn’t start them because they wereassured of their success before theystarted. They started because theyhad an idea and they believed thatthey could make it happen irrespec-tive. They didn’t let the negativenews of the day get in their way.

A man called Thomas Smith invent-ed the christmas cracker in 1846when he saw sweets wrapped up intissue paper and twisted at each endin Paris. He brought the idea backto England and then came up withthe idea of putting in a poem withthe sweet. It was in 1860 that headded the cracker. These were origi-
nally called "cosaques". His nextinnovation was to replace the sweetwith a novelty gift, but it was onlyafter he died that his sons, who tookover the business added the paperhat and by the end of the 1930's re-placed the poems with jokes or lim-ericks.

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,When the road you're trudging seems all uphill,When the funds are low and the debts are high,And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,When care is pressing you down a bit,Rest, if you must, but don't you quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns,As every one of us sometimes learns,And many a failure turns about,When he might have won had he stuck it out;Don't give up though the pace seems slow,You may succeed with another blow.
Often the goal is nearer than,It seems to a faint and faltering man,Often the struggler has given up,When he might have captured the victor's cup,And he learned too late when the night slipped down,How close he was to the golden crown.
Success is failure turned inside out,The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,And you never can tell how close you are,It may be near when it seems so far,So stick to the fight when you're hardest hitIt's when things seem worst that you must not quit.
Don’t You Quit

Away in a manager is always the first carolthat children are taught. Away in a Mangerwas originally published in 1885. The pub-lication of Away in a Manger was in a Lu-theran Sunday school book and this createdthe misconception that the lyrics of Awayin a Manger were actually written by Mar-tin Luther himself. The author is unknown. The music to Away in a Manger was com-posed by William J. Kirkpatrick in 1895.
Away in a manger,No crib for His bedThe little Lord JesusLaid down His sweet head
The stars in the bright skyLooked down where He layThe little Lord JesusAsleep on the hay
The cattle are lowingThe poor Baby wakesBut little Lord JesusNo crying He makes
I love Thee, Lord JesusLook down from the skyAnd stay by my side,'Til morning is nigh.
Be near me, Lord Jesus,I ask Thee to stayClose by me foreverAnd love me I pray
Bless all the dear childrenIn Thy tender careAnd take us to heavenTo live with Thee there

A Christmas club, a savings accountin which a person deposits a fixedamount of money regularly to be usedat Christmas for shopping, cameabout around 1905.
Before settling on the name of TinyTim for his character in "A ChristmasCarol," three other alliterative nameswere considered by Charles Dickens. They were Little Larry, Puny Pete, and Small Sam
Christmas was once a moveable feastcelebrated at many different timesduring the year. The choice of De-cember 25, was made by Pope JuliusI, in the 4th century A.D., becausethis coincided with the pagan ritualsof Winter Solstice, or Return of theSun. Christmas trees are edible. Manyparts of pines, spruces, and firs can beeaten. The needles are a good sourceof vitamin C. Pine nuts, or pinecones, are also a good source of nutri-tion
Christmas was once a moveable feastcelebrated at many different timesduring the year. The choice of De-cember 25, was made by Pope JuliusI, in the 4th century A.D., becausethis coincided with the pagan ritualsof Winter Solstice, or Return of theSun. The intent was to replace thepagan celebration with the Christianone.

During the ancient 12-day Christmascelebration, the log burned was calledthe "Yule log." Sometimes a piece ofthe Yule log would be kept to kindlethe fire the following winter, to en-sure that the good luck carried onfrom year to year. The Yule log cus-
tom was handed down from the Dru-ids.
It is estimated that 400,000 peoplebecome sick each year from eatingtainted Christmas leftovers
More diamonds are purchased atChristmas-time (31 percent) than dur-ing any other holiday or occasionduring the year.
The abbreviation of Xmas for Christ-mas is not irreligious. The first letterof the word Christ in Greek is chi, which is identical to our X. Xmaswas originally an ecclesiastical abbre-viation that was used in tables andcharts.
The tradition of Christmas lightsdates back to when Christians werepersecuted for saying Mass. A simplecandle in the window meant thatMass would be celebrated there thatnight.
The world's first singing commercialaired on the radio on Christmas Eve,1926 for Wheaties cereal. The fourmale singers, eventually known as theWheaties Quartet, sang the jingle. The Wheaties Quartet, comprised ofan undertaker, a bailiff, a printer, anda businessman, performed the songfor the next six years, at $6 per singerper week. The commercials were aresounding success.
Theodore Roosevelt, a staunch con-servationist, banned Christmas treesin his home, even when he lived inthe White House. His children, how-ever, smuggled them into their bed-rooms.
There are twelve courses in theUkrainian Christmas Eve supper. Ac-cording to the Christian tradition, each course is dedicated to one ofChrist's apostles.
When Robert Louis Stevenson, au-thor of Treasure Island, died on De-cember 4, 1894, he willed hisNovember 13 birthday to a friendwho disliked her own Christmasbirthday.
In the old times, sugar was very ex-pensive; therefore, Christmas cakeswere a luxury.

In these times of austerity, it is hardto see any glimmer of hope, particu-larly after digesting the budget andconsidering that Christmas is sonear. However there are good newsstories breaking about Fairtrade eve-ry day. This is just one of themabout underprivileged teenagersfrom the slum of “El Milagro”(which means miracle in Spanish),Trujillo, Peru who have succeededagainst the odds; broken the mostrestrictive chains of poverty. Thanksto the sale of Fairtrade cards, thesechildren can now look to the futurewith hope and optimism.Maria flor has graduated from work-ing on the garbage belt, living nextto the notorious Trujillo prison tosecuring a position in the prestigiousCesar Vallejo university. Like somany inhabitants of the slum, herfamily barely scraped out a living, collecting paper, tin, iron and glass, yet she is one of the lucky ones whohave secured a future for herself. She will start her 4 year course incommunication sciences position inJanuary 2011.The key to her success lies in Fair-Mail which produces greeting cardsfrom Peru and India. They find un-derprivileged teenagers, selectingthem on motivation, punctuality andtalent. They train them in photogra-
phy, offer them part-time work and50% of the profits from the sale oftheir cards to finance housing andeducation.“It makes me happy to make photosthat reflect the emotions of my Peru.In the future I want to be a nurse tocure people and I want to be an im-portant person in life!” says Mariaflor.Another rising star from Peru is teen-age photographer Yuli Silva Acuna. She takes beautiful photographs ofStar fruits and flowers and has soldover 35,000 cards over the past 4months, which an absolute record, especially if you consider that Yuli isonly 16 years old! Two of her pic-tures were selected by a major Dutchretail chain for their Christmascards. Thanks to Yuli’s success, none ofher family now work in the garbagebelt and her mother tries to earn afew soles extra selling delicious“papa rellena’s” and “ceviche” in theweekends.Kiosk Fairtrade Shop, Clonmel cur-rently stocks these cards, along withmany other recycled items from theDeveloping World. Breaking the Chains of Povertywith Fairtrade
Haiti Connect, a volunteer organisa-tion founded by Tipperary basedcouple Evert and Kate Bopp, scoreda major success in their efforts tohelp the people of Haiti.
Haiti Connect which was set up inJanuary after the devastating earthquake hit Haiti killing over 200,000people. The organisation set out toprovide technology assistance toNGO & aid organisations as well aslocal Haitian organisations such ashospitals, schools, orphanages etc. Most of this was aimed at buildingcomputer networks and providinginternet access for these organisa-tions however, as Bopp says, “Wealso understood that the absence of adependable electricity supply was aserious issue in Haiti”. The organisa-tion managed to secure the donationof a large capacity (60kw) dieselgenerator and shipped this to Haititogether with over 200,000 euroworth of other equipment. “The gen-erator was more than we would needfor our own projects and had the ca-pacity to power a small hospital or aschool. We were sure that we wouldfind good use for it” says Bopp. Thatopportunity arose when Evert Boppfound out about the “CAMEJO”project run by an organisation called“Renewal4Haiti”. This organisationwas helping to rebuild a hospital inLeogane, Haiti. Leogane was wherethe epicentre of the January earth-quake lay and the new hospital there, which was to open in February, wasflattened by the quake.
Renewal4Haiti had been workinghard to rebuild the hospital and wasready to open the first medical facili-ty in Leogane. However they lackedan electricity supply. Electricity topower the operating theatres, elec-tricity to power the sterilising equip-ment and electricity to power oxygenequipment to deal with the flood ofcholera patients. All they had was asmall generator that wasn’t able tocope with the needs of the facility. To complicate matters even furtherthis small generator broke down justat the outset of the cholera epidemicthat is still holding Haiti in its grip. When Evert & Kate Bopp heardabout this they quickly made the de-cision that this was the best locationto donate their generator to. “I wastalking to several hospitals and clin-ics at that time. All of these werehindered by the lack of reliable pow-er to some extent. However we onlyhad one generator and as heartbreak-ing as it is you have to make choicesand prioritize needs. Leogane had noreal hospital and the impact of donat-ing a generator would be the greatestthere so the generator went to the
CAMEJO hospital in Leogane. To behonest I wish we had a hundred gen-erators to donate as there is still noreal infra-structure to address theseneeds in Haiti. And that is nearly 11months after the earthquake struck”
The impact of having a reliable pow-er source at the hospital in Leoganehas been significant to say the least.Jodel Charles the Haitian born direc-tor of Renewal4Haiti who runs theproject had the following to say:
“It helped us to save lives. Paediatricnebulizers (we see a LOT of kidswith asthma and respiratory issues)get powered from it especially”
“Thanks again Evert. I don’t thinkeven you realize the magnitude ofelectricity at a hospital. Patientsdon’t even want to leave CAMEJOeven after them being discharged. When our generator broke down, wewere force to rely on a backup one ofonly 4kW. Needless to say we werevery limited in the care we were ableto offer and were frequently forcedto subject hospitalized patients tospend the night in the dark. Thanksto the generous folks at Haiti Con-nect, we now enjoy a 60kW genera-tor and are able to power all of ourmedical equipment without interrup-tion to service. It powers our operat-ing room and all of the equipment inour trauma services. We treat 100-115 outpatients daily and 20 inpa-tients on average daily”
In the meantime Haiti Connect con-tinues their hard work to address thecurrent needs of people in Haiti aswell as contribute to the rebuildingof the country. They have an ongo-ing need for volunteers willing totravel to Haiti as well as donations offunds & equipment. “We currentlyhave seven pallets of medical andother supplies ready for shipment toHaiti but do not have funds to payfor the transport costs. Financial do-nations or a shipping company will-ing to ship it to Haiti at no costswould be very welcome” says EvertBopp. In the longer term Haiti Con-nect is currently involved in 4projects to provide IT equipment andInternet access to the Haitian peopleand they have also plans to assistHaitians in starting their own enter-prises using the technology providedto them. “We make a point of work-ing with Haitians and Haitian organi-sations as much as possible as thereal future lies in enabling the Hai-tian people to build their own fu-ture”.

(continued from previous issue)This article is based on how to counselmale abusers, but much of it could beapplied to females. It is a big challenge. As a humanistic person-centred coun-sellor I must put myself in the shoes ofthe person who comes to me for coun-selling, and I have to have empathy forthem. It is very easy to have empathywith a victim, but not so easy with anabuser. I base my empathy, however, onmy belief in the goodness of all humanbeings (recognising that all people havea shadow side and ugly traits and behav-iours), although, as I have said in aprevious article, I do not counsel sexualabusers. I would, however, gladly coun-sel all other types of abusers, not onlybased on my philosophy, but on thesatisfaction of helping an individualovercome and cease abusive behaviour, and in so doing break a cycle and pre-vent the suffering of victims, and thecreation of future abusers.Couple counselling, batterer interven-tion programmes and anger manage-ment courses are sometimes consideredas good ways of helping abusers to stoptheir behaviour. I am not sure what thesituation is in Ireland, and I do not knowif there are any batterer interventionprogrammes in this country. It is betterto contact the local HSE region to getinformation on this. At any rate researchhas shown that batterer intervention pro-grammes have a very low rate of suc-cess. They do, however, help batterersbe aware of their behaviour, and a bat-terer can learn in a group setting howabuse hurts their partners and their chil-dren. Groups also hold men accountablefor their behaviour, and provide a set-ting for positive change. On the otherhand the abuser is surrounded by violentmen and may not be inclined to revealthe inner pain that often promotes abu-sive behaviour. There are anger management pro-grammes available in Ireland but it isstrongly and rightly argued that angermanagement programmes are not theway to treat domestic violence. Abusemay not be based upon anger, althoughit does have a place in abuse. Angermanagement programmes may help theabuser control violent behaviour but itwill not restore a relationship.Neither is couple counselling a goodway to help batterers deal with theirabusive behaviour. Very often when thequestion of violence comes up the abus-er becomes defensive, clams up or sim-ply does not return for further sessions. He may also try to control the sessionand use it as an opportunity to furtherblame the unfortunate victim. Worsestill, the victim’s assertions may arousehis anger further, and leave her open tofurther more severe abuse at home,
where she is unprotected. On the otherhand victims may be afraid to disclose.Further, the fact that the victims have toattend the counselling sessions may givethe impression that they are in some wayresponsible for the abuse. Overall, I be-lieve that couples counselling is unpro-ductive if not dangerous.Individual counselling is vital alongwith any programmes that are availablefor abusers. But for successful counsel-ling the therapist must be aware of cer-tain facts. I have said in a previousarticle that there is a low rate of healingamong abusers, and not only must thecounsellor be well educated in whatabuse is and the characteristics of abus-ers, but must also be aware of how abus-ers are likely to behave when beingcounselled. The first thing for the counsellor to re-member is that abusive behaviour is achronic condition, and it can take yearsto make a lasting change. It has beenestimated that 75% of men in the U.S.who are on supervision continue to as-sault their partners. One of the aspectsthat make counselling abusers difficultis that they continue to have contactwith their victims. Indeed the victimsmay love the abusers and see them asgood providers, thus reinforcing the ten-dency in abusers to deny that they areabusers or to minimise it.
