Shot types. The use of the growths off the title
implies that this is the start of a biological thriller. This is further backed up by the use of the close up on a drug earlier on in the scene (the picture on
the bottom). This makes the reader interested in what the film is going to be about as the title is so spooky they
will be expecting the film to be as eerie and mysterious.
The Typography. • In the title sequence of The Widow maker the names of the actors and
the important people in the movies names fade away. This adds to the eeriness of the whole title sequence as the disappearance of the words is quite creepy when added to the rest of the image and the backing music. This is repeated through out the entire title sequence, this makes it an effective opening because it is consistent which is a feature of a effective title sequence. In this title the words also seem to move which is with the seen of the background which is all about blood bacteria and medicines. It is an effective opening as it is specific to the genre of the film it is associated with.
Names in the opening sequence. • In the opening to The widow maker no actors or actresses names
appear, this makes the viewer think that it is maybe a low budget production and can not afford the a list actors and actresses that other Hollywood films can attract to sell movies. Instead it tries to sell the opening to the film by stating the important people in the production side of the film like the producer the executive producer and the director.
Why is it an effective opening.• It is an effective opening as it is specific to the genre of the film it is
associated with. This is a very creepy film based around DNA bacteria or blood or something along those lines from what we get from the introduction. This is effective also as it makes the viewer want to keep watching by keeping the title sequence along the same lines but still using different pictures and scenes on those lines to keep the viewers attention. The repetition of the blue and the red helps to keep the consistency of the
title sequence.
