I started by going onto InDesign and laying out the rough design so I knew what layout I wanted to follow. To start with I added in the boxes where I wanted each part to go so I have a rough layout to follow. I placed them on a slant because I wanted it to be eye catching and look more attractive towards my younger audience. I then found a font that I wanted to use for the title. I placed it going down the side instead of across the tip because I thought it pulled the whole page together better making it look more attractive. I also added in the triangles for the text down the side. I made them triangles because it was a shape that fit in with the hip-hop style but also made the text fit nicely within the small space around the edges. I then added a black slanted box across the top of the page. I did this because it helped to lead the audience from the top of the page down with the title. It also made the title stand out because the title has a

white background. I then added in a page number in the top corner so when you are looking through the fanzine you know which page is which. I also added an image to the centre, I added this image because there is a range of different fashions used and it fits in with the page. Then I went on da font and found a font that I wanted to use for the strap line. I then placed it in the black area because it was the title of the page so I wanted it at the top and the background of the font was white so it looked good against the black. I made two of the triangles yellow and one green because they were bold and stood out and gave the page a variety of colour. I then added a boarder around each part of the page because it made the shapes and colours stand out more. I also added my text into the triangles. I put the text into the triangles because I thought it looked a lot more interesting than putting the text in a normal square box.

I think that the layout I have done is a very strong point of my fanzine because it is unique and fits in with the fanzine style. It also fits in with the hip hop style because it is edgy and not perfectly neat. The colours I have used are bold and stand out which is what I wanted to do because I wanted to grab my audience and pull them in to read more. I have also used bold clear headers to help grab my audience’s attention because if it stands out they are more likely to see it and read it. If I was to do this again I would change the body font because it is very simple and quite boring so I would change it to something more related to hip hop. Other than the text I wouldn’t change anything I think that

my fanzine looks professional and it’s turned out exactly how I wanted it to. I think I managed my time very well with this because I knew how many day I had to do this so I made sure I knew what I wanted to do on each day to make sure I had it finished on time.

I think the fonts you have used are appropriate and they fit in with the subject. You have used a good colour scheme which is vibrant and stands out really well. I like the way you have used triangles as the text boxes instead of using the normal shape as it makes it look more interesting. The photograph you have used fits in well with the layout because it clearly shows the different styles. You have shown clearly the page number in the top corner. The colours are also the same as the Jamaican flag which fits in with hip hop. - Niki

I think the overall look for this page fits well with the Hip Hop subculture because its colourful and eye catching. The colours used are bright which resembles the colour of the clothes that people used to wear. I think the picture you have chosen works well in the middle of the page and I think it looks good in black and white as it contrasts with the colours used elsewhere. I think the font used and the triangles catch your eyes and make you want to read it as it looks really intriguing and something you would probably see in magazines. - Shannon

The overall look of this fanzine is to a high standard using bright attractive colours that are well fitting with the tone of the text. The use of different shapes on the page makes the layout more interesting and having the text in them makes it even better. It’s easy to follow and good to look at the only thing you could change would be the font to one that would be more fitting to the Jamaican theme but the overall is a good finish. – Brandon

BroadsheetI opened up a new document and made it to the size 375mm x 597mm. I then added in the grids so I had something to follow then I looked at the rough sketch I had drawn so I know where I wanted each section to go. I then added in coloured boxes so you could see where I wanted each part. I made sure I used different colours for each area. I then added text into the boxes so you knew what I wanted there. This would make it easier when I came to add text and images onto my layout. Then I started to insert the images I wanted to use. The main image in the centre is related to what the main text is going to be about. I had used this image because it will catch people’s attention and make them want to read more. Then I have used an image of a hip hop artist kanye west because under the title I am going to have a strap line promoting an exclusive interview with him. I then added the title. I used this font because I thought it looked professional and stood out catching people attention. I then added my strap line promoting the exclusive

interview, and I also make the text box blue because it thought it needed some colour adding because without it, it looks very plain and boring and unattractive. To capture people’s attention you need to make sure it looks good. I then added in bullet points just pointing out the other exciting parts that are going to be included within the broadsheet, this will help to make people read further on. I then added in my text that I wrote out about the release of the new GTA game. I placed it under the bullets then I followed the page round going underneath the image. I added in a drop cap so it helps to lead the reader to the start of the text. I made the text a readable size but a size that fit a lot of text in because I didn’t want to only have a few words. I think that looking at previous broadsheets they all have a lot of writing on their front cover so I wanted to keep my front cover looking quite busy with a lot of writing. Then finally I added in hip hop related adverts at the bottom of the page. This will help break up the page from having so much text and it will also help the business to gain a profit. I added two because it fit well across the space at the bottom that I had set for adverts. I didn’t include the price because I could find anywhere to place it without effecting what I had already done. If I was to do this again I will try fitting everything on.

I think that the layout I did for my broadsheet worked really well as it looks exactly what broadsheet would look like. I also think that the fonts I have used fit in well with the style because I have searched into existing broadsheets so I knew what kind of fonts I should be looking at. The ones I chose make the broadsheet look more professional. Adding the blue box around the tag line brought a small amount of colour into the paper because no much colour is used other than the picture. It helps to split up the masthead and the body. If I was to do this again I would change the header because I don’t think the name of it was very professional I could have chosen something that already exists. Other than the title I wouldn’t change anything because it turned out exactly how I wanted it to and I’m happy with how professional my results are. I managed my time very well because I knew how long I had so I knew what I had to do and each step I had to take to make sure I completed it on time and I stuck to the schedule and got it finished on time.

This is a really good example of a broadsheet and is clear that you have looked into and really focused on making the best layout for this piece. And after doing so means you were left with a good broadsheet look. Having an advertisement in the middle is good although could of be a picture more to do with the text although still works well. Having the exclusive interview highlighted at the top in a good idea as, it would be a definite attraction. - Brandon

I think this broadsheet is really good, as you can tell who the target audience just by look at it. Also it has different colours around the page, like the blue underneath the masthead works well against the black writing of text as the shade of blue you have chosen makes the writing stand out. I think the font relates really well with the subject of the whole page as it’s something you would see in a game magazine. The image you have chosen resembles what your article is about which is a good thing and also the size of the Image is just right because even without a headline to say what it’s about the image gives it away. - Shannon

The layout for this broadsheet is good because it looks formal. It has a lot of writing which is split up into small sections, making it easier to read. The photograph in the middle is relevant to the subject and it breaks up the text to make it look more interesting. The photograph is also an appropriate size to see from a distance. The headline is straight forward and bold so that it is clear. The bullet points at the top are a good idea to show what things are included in the newspaper. – Niki

TabloidI added coloured boxes the make a layout of where I

wanted each part of the page to be so when I came to inserting the images and text I knew exactly where I wanted them to go. I made them different colours so I also knew which part was which and it stood out. I then added text onto the box labelling them with what I wanted to put inside it so I knew exactly what I was going to put there when I came to make it. I then inserted my image where I wanted it to go, then I moved it round to make it look better and make sure it was places exactly how I wanted it to look. I then added the black box next to the image as a background for the text that wild go on top. I then added the title of the paper which stood out clearly at the tip of the page so the audience would know what it was so would be able to find it easy. I then added my headliner in a bold font which stood out against the rest of the page. I then added a strap line just under the headliner so give a bit more information. Then I added a small paragraph of

text with the start of the story. I have placed this under the strapline this helps the audience eyes run through the whole page smoothly. I then changed the layout a little by moving parts and making text bigger. I did this because I wasn’t completely happy with the way the previous layout looked. It didn’t look professional which is what I was aiming for. So to make it look better I made the headliner a lot bigger and bolder so it stood out more, then I made the strapline a different font which was clearer and more easier to read. Then I added a shadow around the white box with the paragraph in because it made it look softer against the image.

I think the overall layout of my tabloid is professional but I think I could have done it a lot better. It didn’t turn out exactly how I wanted it to which is what I would improve if I were to do it again. I think I would do more research into more tabloids and look more into the design because I could make it look more professional and realistic. The fonts I have used are good and grab the audience’s attention they also stand out against the black background, which is what I wanted to do. I also include colours to make it look more interesting so people would read it. I didn’t manage my time as well on this one because I was finding it hard to come up with a layout I was happy with so I took longer doing that so I ran over slightly with time but I made sure I had everything else finished so running over schedule slightly wasn’t a problem, I still managed to complete it on time.

The layout for your tabloid is really good. The headline is really clear and could be seen at a distance which would be good for making sales. The tagline is underlined and in capitals to make it stand out more. You have also not put much text which is a good thing because it could bore people if they have to read a lot. The image stands out and catches the reader’s eye although you can only see part

of the name of the new game when it would be useful to see the whole of it. The white writing on the black background is really effective. – Niki

I think the layout for your tabloid looks professional and something you would see in shops. Making the headline bold and white makes it stand out against the background which makes it look more intriguing. Also the tagline you have chosen, you have put in capital, which makes it look important and as if you are shouting it, which grabs the reader’s attention. I think you could improve this a little bit by getting the ‘Grand Theft Auto, name in the picture more because many people might not know what you are talking about if they do not see the name of the game. I also think the write in the white box may be a little too spaced out so I think it might look better. Also the other thing I would consider changing is the date line underneath ‘The Sun’ I think having the writing in white would make it stand out more against the red box so it would be easier to read for people. – Shannon

The design looks interesting because it possesses an individual style which is different from any other print based products I have seen, the way the content has been laid out makes it look interesting and attracts the eye and the target audience. The fonts used also attract the eye of the target audience because it is bold and contrasts from the background of the design, I also like the font used in the small text box because it is similar to leading tabloid fonts and it is simple and clear making it easy to read for any age of audience. The use of white space in the text box also brings a good effect to the design. – Hannah

From doing this I feel as though I have improved my skills on in design. Before I started this I had never used in design and now I feel confident enough to be set a full project and understand exactly what I have to do. I feel as though I will still need some more improvements but I know a lot of the basics. I’m happy with the way that my designs came out considering they were all the first time I have done anything like this.
