1. The opening shot includes intertitles of the production of the film this is shows the audience what company had produced the film. It

also gives the sense of genre of the film, as the book opening is mysterious which suggests it to be a horror or thriller. Also the font

used for the interitle creates a frightening feel. The colours used within the first shot doesn’t show much for the film however the plain

pale colours keeps the anonymous feeling which is the affect that is intended. The sound effects bring tension to the film as the noises

are unclear however the same background sound is carried on thought out the opening sequence keeping up the suspense.

2. Within shot two the interetitles are continued with the same font however the image has change to a disturbing pair of hand. This

dramatically adds to the horror genre as it exaggerates the mysterious feel. Another unidentified sound affect is added over this shot to

create a feeling of something unusual is going on.

3. The next shot shows a dirty pair of hands holding a blade; it gives the audience more information to the film suggesting that it has

something to do with death or injury however it doesn’t give anything away as the audience wants to find out who the person is and

what the blade has got to do within the movie.

4. The title is shown in the next shot so the audience is aware of the name of the film. The font used is once again representing the type

of genre of the film as it isn’t neat and that the animation of flickering shows a sense of eccentric mood to the film. The size of which

the title is made is effective due to the speed of which the title is shown as it flashes up very quickly almost giving a shock feeling.

5. Shot five concludes with the mysterious images that keep the audience interested yet still unsure of what is going on. It also includes an

intertilte to show who is starring in the film. However the tempo of the music starts to get quicker and tenser, creating a more worrying

feel.

6. This shot is still mysterious and strange image however it is clearer that a man is involved in some type of plot that could be gruesome

as the instruments he is holding would have something to do with the rest of the film. The duration of the shot isn’t very long however

it is quicker than most of the other shots so the audience can see more visibly of what is happening.

7. Once again this shot is similar to shot six as it is still unclear what is happening yet its adding to the disturbing atmosphere of the film

and that the film genre is horror without being told directly. With the quick tempo of the music and different sound affects being

added.

8. The shot mostly includes intertiles and concluding the cast of the film. The background image is of a man with his eyes crossed out in

black marker that is showing the audience that there is some sort of feud or anger between the anonymous character and this other

man. This giving the audience more information to the rest of the film yet still keeps them in suspense so they want to carry on

watching.

9. The concluding shot is very simple as it only shows high buildings in very dull weather and with the last of intertiles saying “Monday”.

This shows that the film is getting to reality and the situations are more realistic. The music has stopped also showing that the movie is

going to carry on but with non-diegetic background sounds of traffic.

Overall the opening sequence of Se7en is very effective as it keeps the audience interested yet in suspense all the way though. It also is

effective because it immediately shows the genre of being a mystery thriller, which would interest a lot of people to watch the rest of the film.
