The young girl Gwyneth and her family are fighting to keep starvation and death from the door . Things go from bad to worse when they are forced to move to the coast where the soil is bad and the life as fishermen is hard . In the end, Gwyneth’s parents have no other choice but to give her away to a Catholic abbey in the rugged Northwest Highlands of Scotland . Here, Gwyneth encounters a world full of corruption and duplicity and makes a dangerous enemy in the powerful Abbess . But an old icon and a mysterious, cloaked man appear in her life and give her a task which far exceeds her abilities, but lives are at stake if she does not complete it .

The Forgiveness of Sins is a historical drama which takes place in the beginning of the nineteenth century in the Scottish Highlands, during the aftermath of the unsuccessful fight for Scottish independence and emancipation from England . The old clan system has dissolved and the Scottish clan leaders have been replaced by English noblemen who care nothing for the general population and only want to use the land for sheep farming . This causes great waves of poverty and emigration .

Excerpt:

She sat in the corner, clutching the sack. The more she thought

about it, the less she believed that her escape would be a

success. It was one thing for someone to get a hold of the key

and let her out, but how was she going to get through the

abbey without causing a stir and getting apprehended? And

cheat both the monks and the Ferryman and cross the river on

the ferry? And even if all those things happened, where would

she go? They would easily be able to catch up with her. It

wouldn’t be long, before someone noticed that she was gone.

She folded her hands around the icon and fervently prayed to

God. That was her only weapon.

The phone rang.

- I’m bringing her over now!

Hans nodded, as though the lady at the other end of the line

could see him.

Juliane looked at him. So this was the day when the girl would

arrive. Her mother was going abroad and Hans and Juliane

had agreed to take care of the little one. No one had interfered

in any way. The council had left it completely to them to take

responsibility for her. At least, that was the information the

town’s inhabitants were given.

- Her name is Trine. Then she hung up. Juliane and Hans looked

at each other. Juliane gave a slightly uncertain smile and Hans

lowered his eyes.

Excerpt:

”Her hands carefully moved across the floor until they found

the letter pages. Then they crumpled them up with a decisive

motion, as if what had been written on them had never

taken place. A bitter hatred filled her usually generous heart.

The people she had loved all her life had let her down, had

committed such an unforgivable mistake that they had started

a new war. A war which consisted only of dead memories,

of memories which nothing could replace. The result was an

unbearable emptiness.”

”Startled, she sat up in bed, letting her anxious gaze glide up

and down the wall. Her mind went back to the war when the

soldiers used to come into her family’s home, screaming and

striking at them. Those strikes were not just ordinary strikes,

those strikes were filled with an atrocious anger which doubled

the pain. The shouts form the warriors were not ordinary

shouts, either, they were filled with a tremendous hatred which

made them sound far louder.”

Mrs Terkelsen’s Will is a novel about people.

You might meet them in the street without wondering who they were. But like anyone else, when you get to know them, they have a surprising story to tell.

There is Nina, the social worker, and her husband the solicitor, who are fighting to hang on to their family life with their two children . There is Ester Terkelsen, who has blue blood running through her veins, and there is her Jewish friend, Rachel, who has a grim past . There is Nelly and her husband, who have a very definite opinion about how life should be lived, sitting in their flat on the third floor on Enghavevej .

As the story progresses, you get a glimpse into their lives and the very different ways in which they handle them . They cross each other’s paths like marionnettes, led around by fate .

You will probably wish you could get directly involved, but you cannot, you must remain a spectator .

Once the story is over, you will feel that you know these people and want to meet them again to see what happens to them . And so you might, who knows! The novel is a present-day story about people who live their lives in a number of different environments . Even though it is a work of fiction, the characters and the social relations will resonate with many people . The characters and their movements in and out of each other’s lives hook the reader from start to finish, creating a desire to see how the story develops . It is a book that stays in your thoughts for a long while after it is over .

Hanne Bistrup is a trained psychologist and author. As the seventh child in a large family, she grew up with lots of

people around her. All her life, she has been an avid observer of other people’s behaviour. Both personally and professionally, she has moved in many different environments and been inspired by the people and events she has met along the way. Music has been a faithful companion in her life; she was a singer in a jazz band, has played folk music, has written songs and has helped arrange music festivals. After a long working life, her creative interests are now focused solely on writing.

Excerpt:

When Nelly enters the hallway, she senses that something is different from usual. She looks into

the living room. Mrs Terkelsen is not in her chair by the window, waiting for her breakfast. Nelly

hangs up her coat , takes off her shoes and puts on her slippers as usual. Then she tiptoes up to

the bedroom door and gently knocks. No

one answers. Is she lying in there dead?

Nelly eases the door open - and then opens

it wide. Her heart is in her throat.

Mrs Terkelsen is asleep in the large double

bed! Her ash grey hair flows out over her

pillow, a few stray locks spilling on to one

cheek. There is an impression in the pillow

next to her and the duvet has been pushed

aside – someone was lying there, someone

who has left by now! On Mrs Terkelsen’s

night stand lies a small note. Nelly is

speechless.

Excerpt:

Once inside the room, she pushes the rose petals aside and sits

on the bed. She opens the warm bathrobe, takes a deep breath

and looks down her body, trying to suck in her stomach a bit

in the orange bathing suit. Last year’s model. If only she had

bought a new one for the trip! She rises heavily and goes into

the bathroom where she stands with her back turned to the

full-size mirror so she can see herself from behind in the clear

surface when she turns her head. Her thighs look like a lunar

landscape, and when she twists her back, her waist folds into

unattractive rolls. In the lunar landscape, a few unwanted dark

hairs grow and she gets out her shaver and removes them while

she tries to smile at herself in the mirror, as though to get her

muscles used to the exercise.
