Which type of rock music do you prefer (pick one)?

I decided that I wanted to make a rock music magazine but was unsure as to what subsection of the genre to use. As you can see from my results, the most popular with my sample was punk and indie. However, emo also had a lot of votes and is unrepresented in the music magazine business and so I want to combine these three elements.

Which music magazines to you currently buy?

I wanted to know which magazines currently sell well amongst my target audience so I am aware of my main competitors and also so I know where to draw inspiration from. I discovered that NME is the best selling, followed by Kerrang. I can see common features in these magazines such as an informal, exclusive style, neutral colour scheme and the cover is designed similarly.

What price would be the maximum price you would be willing to pay for a

magazine?

As the producer of a magazine, I would obviously want to gain as much money from the sale as possible, however I don’t want to be considered as expensive. I think I will price my magazine at £3.00 as it is the lower value of one of my most popular categories and around the general accepted price currently on the market.

Which of the below would attract you to a music magazine (pick 3)?

It was vital to know what my potential consumers wanted in a magazine in order to produce something that was going to sell. I allowed my sample to choose which three from a list most attracted them to a magazine and my results showed that Artists Interviews, Gig Reviews and Music News were the most popular. I would advertise these features on the front of my magazine as they are clearly what my target audience look for in a magazine.

Which of these fonts do you prefer?

I chose a selection of fonts that I wanted to use for my masthead to see which my sample preferred. They were:

•Black Casper•Pulse sans virgin•Impact label•REBOARD•Laundromat 1967•Times New Yorker

Font 4 was Reboard and it had significantly more votes than the other fonts. I will use it for my masthead as if it was a stencil and there will have graffiti spray around it.

Who are your top three favourite music artists?

I asked this question to see if any particular artists were popular amongst my sample to feature in my magazine. Also, this means I could also have similar artists to the popular ones to try and inspire my readers to hear some other music they might enjoy. My top three results were:•My Chemical Romance•Paramore•The Wombats

Other popular results were:•Panic at the Disco•The Killers•Bullet for my Valentine•All American Rejects•Kings of Leon•The Cure

Also, this selection of artists support the first question I asked about genre.

Who are your top three least favourite music artists?

As well as which artists to feature, I needed to know which I should definitely not feature. I could also mock these artists to build a friendly, jokey atmosphere with my audience. The most popular three were:•Anyone whom gained fame through the X Factor•Cheryl Cole•Miley Cyrus/ Hannah Montana

Other popular results were:•James Blunt•Peter Andre•Britney Spears•Rihanna •Akon•Tinchy Stryder

How often would you prefer the magazine to be published?

I needed to know how often my sample would like the magazine to be published as it could be a large contributing factor as to whether it was bought at all. As you can see, monthly was the vast majority.

Which of these colour schemes do you prefer?

The last question I asked was about colour scheme as I knew that I vital part of attracting consumers is how the magazine looks on the shelf before it is even read. I wanted to know which colour scheme would attract my target audience and black, white and red proved to be most popular.
