Metal
Introduction to Heavy Metal
. Heavy metal (often referred to simply as metal) is a genre of rock music that developed in the
late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in the Midlands of the United Kingdom and in the
United States.
The bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, massive sound, characterized by highly
amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, emphatic beats, and overall loudness. Heavy
metal lyrics and performance styles are generally associated with masculinity and machismo.
Origins of Heavy Metal
In January 1968 Blue Cheer released a cover of Eddie Cochran's classic "Summertime Blues", from their debut
album Vincebus Eruptum, that many consider the first true heavy metal recording.
The same month, Steppenwolf released its self-titled debut album, including "Born to Be Wild", which refers to "heavy
metal thunder" in describing a motorcycle.
Characteristics of Heavy Metal
Heavy metal is traditionally characterized by:
loud distorted guitars emphatic rhythms
bass-and-drum sound
Metal subgenres variously emphasize, alter, or omit one or more of these attributes.
Subgenres of Heavy Metal
Black metal • death metal • doom metal • glam metal • gothic metal • groove metal • power metal
• speed metal • stoner metal • thrash metal • traditional heavy metal
A number of heavy metal genres have developed since the emergence of heavy metal (often
shortened to metal) during the late 1960s and early 1970s. At times heavy metal genres may overlap or are difficult to distinguish, but they can be identified by a number of traits. They may differ in terms of:
instrumentation, tempo, song structure, vocal style, lyrics, guitar playing style, drumming style, and so
on.
Motörhead, founded in 1975, was the first important band to straddle the punk/metal divide.
With the explosion of punk in 1977, others followed. British music papers such as the NME and Sounds
took notice, with Sounds writer Geoff Barton christening the movement the "New Wave of British Heavy Metal".[110] NWOBHM bands including Iron Maiden, Saxon, and Def Leppard reenergized the
heavy metal genre.
Instruments
Heavy metal bands usually have a generic set up of instruments. Most of these instruments have a unique style or sound to them which make them specific to the metal genre. These instruments
are usually:
Guitar
Heavy Metal Guitars usually have a very distorted sound and are played with speed and often tricky finger work. Here is an example of
Heavy Metal Guitar playing
Bass Guitar
Heavy Metal Bass Guitars usually have a very deep sound and build in speed throughout the
song. Here is an example of a Heavy Metal Bass Guitar
Drums
Heavy Metal Drums are usually played loud and fast paced. They usually utilize the double peddle
method to achieve a very heavy and fast bass beat. Here is a typical example of heavy metal
drumming
Album Artwork
Heavy Metal Album Artwork is usually done in cartoons images. The band name is usually displayed in a unusual
font. Here are some examples:
