Analysis of a Pop Music Video

Mcfly – Five Colours In Her Hair

How It Is A Promotional Video

• The video for ‘Five Colours In Her Hair’ by McFly is a promotional video because it shows the band performing their own song. At the beginning of the video, we see ‘the McFLY show’ which tells the viewers who the band are. We then see them throughout the entire video performing the song.

Camerawork• The camerawork in this music video consists of a variety of shot angles when

showing the band performing, which makes the performance seem more dynamic and energetic. The band is very young; between 16 and 18 years old which is shown through the energy of the camera movements and angles. When they are showing the girl watching the TV, there is mainly a long shot of her from the TV’s point of view, showing that McFly are talking about her in the song. The shots of the band are mostly mid shots, especially when they are lip-syncing. This shows the upper half and it is close enough for us to see that they are lip-synching. The fact that they are young and the music video is very colourful attracted the younger audience of teenagers and children and attracted me when I was younger which

Mise-en-sceneThe overall mise-en-scene of the music video is very bright and colourful, which highlights the title of the song ‘Five Colours In Her Hair’. The costumes of the band members and their audience are very bright with colours such as blue, yellow and pink. This also attracts a young audience to watch the music video and listen to the song. The colours match the age and personality of the band. When showing the girl in the living room, the room and the members of her family are black and white whereas she is wearing very colourful clothes with colourful hair and make-up. This sets her apart from her family and makes her different from them. It also links her to the band and their audience which she is watching on the TV. The mise-en-scene make the music video a pop video because pop videos are seen to be colourful, happy and dynamic. The fact that they are young and the music video is very colourful attracted the younger audience of teenagers and children and attracted me when I was younger which is why I like the video.

EditingThe pace of the editing matches the pace of the song and the different shots have been cut to the beat. This makes the editing smoother and the video is easier for the audience to watch, therefore they will enjoy the music video more than if the editing was not cut to the beat. When the music slows down close to the end of the video, the editing also gets slower which tells the audience the change in mood of the song. The song then speeds up at the end, which causes the cuts to speed up again. The editing at the beginning when the band are being introduced lets the audience know that they are one band as they are all in one shot together but in different sections of the screen. This also matches the title at the beginning which says ‘The McFLY show’ as the hosts of the show may have been introduced like this at the time that the video was made.

Sound

• There is no background sound in the music video which means that the soundtrack was playing throughout the whole music video with nothing (such as a narrative) at the beginning or end of the music video. When the music video starts, the song starts and the song ends when the music video does, apart from the laughing and joking from the band at the very end of the video.

Performance• The band are performing very energetically which makes the

music video more enjoyable to watch because the energy of the band is being transferred into the audience. This is typical for a pop music video as they are enjoyable to watch because of all of the energy in the band’s performance. The girl in the room performs differently to her family which shows how different she is from them. As she is showing a lot of energy because she is having fun watching the video of McFly, her family do not understand this and are separating her by performing actions such as the father playing the violin and the brother playing football in front of her.
