Les Misrables is produced by Universal Pictures, Relativity Media and a Working Title Film. Directed by Tom Hooper and written by William Nicholson, Alain Boublil, Claude Michel Schonberg and Herbert Kretzmer.

Production

In developing the film, Cameron Mackintosh co produced the film with Eric Fellner, acquiring the films rights and concluding it near the end of 2011. Being filmed in numerous locations such as, Winchester, Portsmouth, Oxford and France, with a budget of $61 million, the films vocals were recorded live on set using live piano accompaniments played through earpieces as a guide, this live recording method has been stated as a worlds first showing its new technologies. Filming began on 8th March 2012 and finished October 2012. At least more than 900 crew members were involved in the production of Les Misrables.

Distribution

The distributors for this production include: Universal Pictures, Solar Entertainment, Toho Towa, UIP, Universal Pictures Canada, UPI and Zon Audiovisuais. On 20th September 2012 an extended first look was released on the films official Facebook page. On 23rd November 2012, Les Misrables was screened for the first time at the Lincoln Center in New York City it received a standing ovation from the audience. The film became worldwide and broke records, it became the largest opening weekend for a musical film as well as for Working Title. It reached a global audience in domestic theatres as well as selected IMAX theatres. The film is confirmed for 22nd March 2013 home release on DVD, Blu Ray and VOD.

Marketing

The film was/is marketed through trailers, social networking sites, celebrity interviews, posters, billboards etc. New medias such as phone apps. Synergy such as soundtracks in sale stores and itunes etc. to promote the film is marketed.

Exhibition

Les Misrables is being shown in 2,808 theatres around 21 countries, until its release date 22nd March 2013 on DVD, Les Misrables will be accessible in cinemas or IMAX theatres.

Production

Funded by Walt Disney Pictures, the studio Pixar. Animation and creation actually began in 2004 and the final film was not released until 29th May 2009. Locations for the film for the animation included Monte Roraima, Matawi Tepui, Angel Falls, Sacramento Zoo. The animation involved produced new technologies, the animators used the figures and facial effects of real people to base on there characters, they used particular amounts of balloons for the flying off scene. New programs were made specially for particular scenes. With a cast of 32, there was a huge crew on set. With a budget of $175,000,000 it grossed 34,284,193 in the UK.

Distributors

Distributors for this film include: Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, Audio Visual Enterprises, Columbia Pictures, Buena Vista Home Entertainment, Disney Blu Ray, Film1, SBS6 and Starz! Network. Released in the US and in the UK, when the film was screened at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, California from May 29 to July 23, 2009, it was accompanied by Lighten Up! A live show featuring Disney characters. Up was released on Blu ray Disc and DVD in North America on November 10th 2009 and in the UK on February 15th 2010. there is also the rental release of the film to Netflix, Blockbuster and Redbox.

Marketing

The film was marketed by a digital download on May 26th 2009 for the soundtrack/score of the film. Promotional partners for the film include Aflac, NASCAR, and Airship Ventures, Cluster Balloons promoted the film with a replica of Carls couch lifted by hot air balloons for journalists to sit in. Prior to its theatrical release, Disney Pixar created three small animated vignettes call UPisodes to promote the film on the internet, you were also able to view this on Apple iTunes and YouTube. Disney acknowledged the fact that not every Pixar film would have to become a franchise.

Exhibition

The film was released in countries such as US, Canada, France, Maghreb, UK, Ireland, Malta, Japan, Spain and Australia. It earned $731,342,744 worldwide, it was the sixth highest grossing film of 2009. From first being released in cinemas in May 2009 its first releasing on DVD was in November 2009. The film can be accessed via DVD, clips from YouTube, Netflix, Redbox and Blu ray.
