Kalahari (Kgalagadi) is composed largely of desert sand red with a fine grain. It stretches from the northern Cape Province of South Africa, Namibia and Botswana to Angola and Zambia in an area of over 1.2 million km2. Much of the desert is like the famous nature reserve of the river delta Okawango which is actually a river estuary water entirely in a sea of sand. In late 1990, the road crosses over the desert and links the Indian Ocean with the Atlantic Ocean, forming an important trade link between Namibia and Mozambique.
