WHAT’S IN A NAME?Britnee Smears, Joan of Anarchy, Lil Miss B. Havin, and Busta Crimes. The Mad Rollin’ Dolls

Roller Derby is back in action this year with new derby dames with new nicknames for a brand new exciting and intense season. With four home teams and two traveling teams, the Madison flat-track roller derby league is guaranteed to offer thrilling bouts for spectators in 2010.

Described as a “combination of adrenalin and estrogen, mascara and mayhem, sparkle and strength,” each of the athletic ladies has the opportunity to choose a nickname for herself that she strives to represent in her uniform during the competitions. The names not only give them a unique character to portray, but they also make the sporting event even more entertaining to watch.

One of the dolls, Jewels of DeNile, adds plenty of sparkle and bling to her uniform and says she has a “bedazzeler” and knows how to use it! Another competitor, Allie Gator, fashions a gator tale for the back of her uniform during combat. And, Tammy Faye Undertakker (TFU) wears way too much mascara and applies it to make it appear as though she has been weeping. TFU also sports the number 700, as in The 700 Club, to complete her look.

The Mad Rollin’ Dolls not only practice hard for their bouts and create fun and imaginative uniforms to wear during the intense battles, but they also give back to the community in numerous ways. The league donates a portion of its proceeds from each of the bouts to local charities and organizations, and the generous ladies often appear at various events around the Madison area.

Roller derby has become quite the popular new sport and is loved by audience members of all ages. The aggressive game has also gained national attention with the 2009 hit movie Whip It starring Drew Barrymore, Ellen Page, Jimmy Fallon and Saturday Night Live’s Kristen Wiig.

If you have not yet seen this one-of-a-kind league of strong, aggressive and athletic women battle it out on the track, come to their season opener on Saturday, January 23 in Veterans Memorial Coliseum where the Reservoir Dolls combat the Vaudeville Vixens and the Quad Squad goes up against the Unholy Rollers.

The Mad Rollin’ Dolls are sure to entertain everyone as combat, camaraderie and colorful characters all combine at the Alliant Energy Center for the second season in a row. For more information on the league and these talented women, visit www.madrollindolls.com.
